They rode for two hours over the sand and rocks, the chill of the night making her shiver in this desert-like climate. Sizzling days and cold nights were common here.

The moon was silver and the stars were so thick they looked as though they were touching, perhaps knitted together from a shattered sun.

Simon had grown mysteriously silent and seemed unaware of her misery. However, her brother seemed to know where they were going. Not once had he faltered along the way.

When Josie told him as much, he relayed, "I'm following the North Star, just like the woman told me to do. It won't be much longer now, Josie. Perhaps a quarter of an hour more."

She nodded, riding alongside of him now. Her arms were covered with a burst of chill bumps and she longed for warm shelter. Her jeans and cotton top seemed rather thin now when only this morning, she had detested their added weight against her hot, moist skin.

"Well, I only hope you're making up your own set of directions, Simon because we won't have use of the North Star come sun-up to lead us back to Siesta Villa again, will we?"

He did not glance at her when he answered, "No, we won't."

"I still don't understand why you had to come all the way down here,"Josie complained softly. "It seems like you could have handled things with your friend by mail-"

"I came for you, little sister," Simon announced tightly and she was suddenly confused.
