His eyes rolled over her and finally rested on her silvery hair, still damp from her plunge in the stream.

"You'll need a hat," he told her. "This heat is no respecter of persons and beams down equally on males, females and princesses alike."

"Unlike you," she had wanted to say, but instead she told him, "Well, I'll make myself one. I'm certainly not taking any more items from you and your stinking lot!"

She wrinkled her nose and nodded toward his shirt that she was wearing.

Diamond narrowed his eyes at her and drawled, "So you are staying now? What happened to your great escape plan?"

Josie rose and dusted off her legs, a pain shooting across her bottom due to her sudden movements. She yelped, then recovered swiftly, not wanting any sympathy from him. Not that he would have offered any.

"Oh yes. I'm staying, but I can't say for how long."

"Oh?"

She coolly studied his face and went on to inform, "I assume that Simon filled you in? He told you why he left me here among the buzzards, the heat of hell and you?" she mocked, using his own words against him.

Diamond nodded and cautiously blinked as if he didn't trust her. Imbecile! It was the other way around. She couldn't trust him.

She licked her dry lips and continued, "Obviously, Simon has no idea just how devoted Kent is to me. The man absolutely adores the ground that I walk on," she tacked on with confidence. "When Simon reaches home, it won't take long for Kent to squeeze the information out of him. Kent will come and rescue me and-and will probably kill you for treating me so-so cruelly."
