Josie had never formally met her brother's friend, as she had only been an infant when they had been neighbors to the Faregates. Years later, after she and Simon were grown, her brother had stumbled across him amidst business dealings and their friendship began where it had ended twenty odd years ago. Simon was speaking with the owner of the cantina now, a heavy set woman whose face had become lost in her massiveness. Like all the senoritas, she had dark features, ebony hair and eyes as black as chunks of coal. Josie was unable to concentrate on the gibberish her brother was spilling out to the disinterested woman. Her eyes remained fastened on a table where two Mexicans were waging a game with a giant black cockroach. They had taken out bolos and each had sliced a straight line on their side of the table, marking the boundaries. The cockroach had been centered on the table and each encouraged the roach to pass their marker first. One of the men who had congregated to view the game made the mistake of spitting a mouthful of tequila at the roach and suddenly, a hostile fight broke out. The sound of shattered glass and fist hitting bone sent the large woman speaking with Simon into action. She swept past them, knocking the stunned Josie down in the process. Before she had completely recovered, Simon had drug her to her feet and out into the open. She narrowed her blue eyes, trying to make out the two burros they had left tied at the hitching post. Night had fallen like a black curtain on this desolate spot of the earth.
