As Kassi continued to admire the plush house that was more mansion than house as they walked along the way, she asked, "George?"

"Yes, our butler," Ruth supplied as they rounded a corner, an exquisite vase coming into view. It was mounted on an ivory pedestal looking delicately fragile. And expensive.

A rather handsome gentleman was planted beside the vase, his dark face thoughtful.

"Bret! I've returned!" Ruth called out, the handsome man thrusting his attention onto her.

"Mother?"

Quickly, Ruth closed the distance, wrapping her son in a bear hug, Bret's face looking almost blue for a moment Kassi considered as she looked on from the sidelines.

As Ruth pulled away from him, she announced, "And I've brought you a wonderful present!"

Bret lifted his brows, Kassi's presence going undetected as she had moved closer to study the vase, Bret's backside in front of her.

"Heaven help me," Bret drawled in a mocking tone. "You didn't drag back a corncob pipe, did you Mother?"

"Oh something much better," Ruth giggled, going to Kassi and spinning her around as Bret curiously turned.

"A cook! A blue ribbon cook!" Ruth exclaimed, her face looking brighter than a 150-watt light bulb.

Bret's brown eyes widened as he studied the new cook. A beautiful woman with sandyblond hair and the prettiest blue eyes that he'd ever seen. Yes, mom did know how to pick them, he silently mocked - outside of the orange-haired thing she'd brought home a couple of weeks ago. A total disaster.

But could this pretty lady cook?

Unfortunately, this would make the seventh cook the ranch had seen in the last seven weeks. It appeared that his mother had taken up matchmaking.....in the form of a cook. Really bad taste, he went on to mock, his joke fanning a quaint smile across his generous lips.

Kassi returned the smile, relaxing in the process. It seemed that Bret Kencade was hospitable - at least giving her a chance to prove her skills.

Bret's heart quickened. My, but what a smile did to the pretty lady's face. Now she looked more angel than lady.

"Kassi Randall meet my son, Bret Kencade," Ruth introduced.

"Very pleased to meet you, sir," Kassi eased out and Bret instantly corrected, "Bret to you, my lady. So, you can cook, eh?"

Kassi fanned long lashes against her cheeks, a bit self-conscious as she had never been a proud person. "Well, your mother seems to think that I can."

"Best apple pie I've ever tasted," Ruth proclaimed, kissing her cupped fingers then releasing them into the air. "A fat pie filled with the sweetest apples. Did I mention she took the blue ribbon?"

"Yes you did," Bret echoed, unable to remove his eyes from Kassi. He suddenly felt giddy - almost enchanted. "I have a passion for apple pie," he said, thinking that it would be easy to develop a passion for the lovely lady before him.

When she didn't respond, in an attempt to cover the sudden span of silence, he asked, "You're from Arkansas I gather?"

"That's right," Kassi echoed. Not wanting to be asked any questions that might lead up to her secret apple pie recipe, she focused his attention on the beautiful vase. "I've never seen anything so beautiful."

"Neither have I," Bret agreed, although he wasn't referring to the vase.

"This is a unique shade of blue," she went on to comment.

"Yes. I was considering which type of flowers to put into the vase," he told her, his eyes shifting to the vase now. "I'm throwing a coming home party for mother-"

"You are? Oh darling!" Ruth gushed, obviously delighted. "I-I love parties. Do you think that you could prepare something yummy for the party, Kassi?"

"Yes, of course," Kassi assured. Then to Bret she asked, "So what kind of flowers did you settle upon?"

Placing a hand over his chin, he looked rather thoughtful as he asked her, "I didn't. What kind would you choose if you were me?"

"Oh - but it's not my vase-"

"Yes, but you do have an opinion, right?" he challenged. "What kind of flowers would you showcase in the vase, Kassi?"

Smiling faintly, she told him, "Well, I happen to fancy dandelions and cattails. They would look very pretty against the blue."
