Fortunately, things had moved rapidly upwards from there.

The hobby farm had been advertised in a free publication which she had used to line her guinea pig cages. As she had been situating the papers - she had seen it, ‘Five acre hobby farm in the mountains. Plenty of room to roam, abundant wildlife, fresh air and a barn and chicken house to boot! House in need of a little TLC. $20,000 cash. First come, first served.’

Why, it was a steal! She had immediately contacted the owner asking Mister Muenster’s attorney to handle the transaction. Before she knew it, she was the proud owner of a five-acre hobby farm.

But things just kept getting better from there. She had also secured employment in the area of her new mountain home, working as a traveling nurse. It was like starting life anew - with so many opportunities - so many new patients to meet.

Once she arrived to the mountains, the house was in far worse order than she had anticipated but with a lot of elbow grease she knew that she could make it sing.

A little new lumber here, a little paint there - that was all it was going to take - after the new roof was up-righted, of course. Although she considered herself multi-talented she would require a contractor for the roof. Until that time, she crossed her fingers that it wouldn’t rain.

She had already given the barn her attention and it was shaping-up nicely. Prudence and Wilbur, her pot-bellied piglets, loved their new pen and roaming area - much nicer than the rental they had moved from. With the weather being mild they could play most of the day outdoors before retiring inside the main house for the late evening hours and the night.

The guinea pigs adored their new roomy quarters equally as much as Prudence and Wilbur. Yes indeed, things were shaping up nicely.

Even so, she hoped that another abandoned animal wouldn’t happen her way - which is how she had ended-up with all her current pets. Before she had moved, it had gotten so bad that people who had heard about her love for animals had begun dumping them at her house.

That’s how she had ended-up with the piglets, three of the tiny dogs, two of the cats and all of the guinea pigs over the course of the last two years. The guinea pigs had been left on her porch in a five gallon pail in the middle of a brisk winter. What type of monster would do that?

She was working on the chorus of ‘I’ll Fly Away’ when her blue eyes caught sight of a cow on the side of the road, Calliope stomping on the brakes - then grateful that no one had been behind her. This she discovered only as the dust settled.

She backed up through the dust storm, the cow looking at her and bellowing.

Poor thing; she had the remainder of a wooden fence of sorts stuck around her neck - as if she had tried to ram through a gate and had been left with the remains. A wooden Elizabethan collar, she went on to decide.

She was very pretty, a butter-brown color with large black eyes. A calf.
