Chapter Nine - Page 70

Paige softened and told him, “We must never let Hollace and Cie know these wicked thoughts you devised, you silly man. It would shatter the both of them." She paused and tightened her tiny pink lips before she challenged him with, "Do you want to know the truth? The real truth?"

To his obvious misery she continued, "My sister is with you in part due to a bit of careful planning."

He shook his head and eased out, "You're only serving to confuse me."

"William, it's actually quite simple," Paige assured, taking another sip of elderberry wine. "The best way to make a woman do what she doesn't want to do is to tell her that she can't do it in the first place. Surely you don't think that I actually favored that idiot Roland over you?" She giggled, then continued to muse aloud, "Once I convinced Cie that you were off limits, she was drawn to you like a moth to a flame. Fact is, William - you owe me big time. I got what I wanted. My sister is nearby and my darling Hollace actually believes he won the battle of wits between us. Why I knew the day that you rescued my dear Cookie that you were the only man for my hair-brained sister. God knows she needs someone with some sense about him to watch over her."

She paused, then challenged in a cocky voice, "As to your idiotic assumptions regarding Hollace, Cie and Cookie, why don't you go and find out the truth yourself? It is obvious that I could talk my brains out and you’d still have doubts.”

When he did not move she encouraged him, “Well, go on, William.”

Paige had confused him further still; now he wasn’t sure what to believe. Nonetheless, he grasped both her hands in his and kissed them, expelling a sob as he searched the meadow for the Shire.

She watched him fade in the distance, a thoughtful look on her face, then she drifted a mocking little laugh through the meadows.  It died on her lips when she saw Hollace’s tall form step from the dense veil of greenery in the short distance.

“Darling!  Why…you are home,” she managed, obviously shocked by his unexpected appearance.

She was closing the distance between them as she went on to ask, “How long have you been er…hiding in the brush, my dear husband?”

Hollace pressed a loving kiss to her lips, holding her close.  She felt his warm sweet breath fan across her face as he softly reprimanded, “Wolves in this meadow?  Couldn’t you have been a tab more original, dear?  Why, there are no wolves here– but there is a sly little brown-headed fox!”

“Oh Hollace!” Paige laughed, glad to have him home again.  How she had missed him.

“Daddy!”
Stone raced for the stables in the distance, Lancelot on his heels. Paige was a mischievous little thing, leaving him with a tortured mind that held hope.
Seth met him and he handed him the reins, making fast tracks for the house, Lancelot by his side.

Mulligan met him and he asked, “Please tend to Lancelot for me.  And where is my wife?”

Mulligan called the dog to him and informed, “In the master bedroom, Sir.”

Stone raced up the stairs, towards the bedroom, thinking he’d never reach her soon enough.  And then he was there, door opened, viewing her laying in a pool of tears on the bed.

She sat up, surprised by his presence.  Until now, he had avoided this room like the plague, choosing to keep his own room as she slept in the oversized bed alone.

“Stone?  Are you all right, my darling?” she asked, rising to meet him, concerned laced on her fragile face.

He took her to him, close to tears himself.  He had been such a monster to her; he would not blame her if she left and never looked back.

“I am of no concern for the moment,” he softly eased out, pulling her close, drinking in the sweet scent of her hair.  “It is past time for me to be concerned for you, my darling.”

She went to pull away, wanting to search his face but he held her tight to him.

“I – I need to tell you something,” he began, pulling her towards the bed.  “Please listen with an open heart.  It is all that I will ask of you.”

Cie sensed his urgency and nodded, thinking it best to remain quiet.

With a tense face he told her, “I just left Paige in the meadows.  She made me realize what a fool I have been…what I have got and what I stand to lose.”

She gave him a quizzical look and he kissed her, then continued, “First of all, I love you – I have since that day in the meadow when I first kissed you.  We shared the moment, Cie.”  Before she could respond, he continued to rush out, “Second of all, I realize I have been absolutely horrible to you and though your sister asked me to remain silent on the matter, I must speak and clear the slate.”

“Oh, darling, nothing matters except our love!” Cie told him, but when she went to go into his strong arms, he held her at bay.

“Please hear me out; I must say this,” he asked her, his tone urgent.

She nodded again and after a deep sigh, he continued, “Today after your surprise party for me, I made up my mind that I wanted to make a happy life with you because I love you – absolutely adore you, my darling.  The thing that has held me back all this time is this; I thought that Cookie was your child…yours and Hollace’s.”

“What?”

“Mad, wasn’t it?  And Paige set me straight – and she’s right; I don’t deserve you, Cie.  But, if you’ll please give me another chance, I will spend eternity making it up to you.”

Cie’s face was etched with a mixture of emotions.  “Oh, darling – my poor tormented darling!  Why didn’t you just ask me? Come here – ”
