Chapter One - Page 7

Stone instantly recovered, repulsed by the woman’s curious gawking dissection of his face.

He was usually accustomed to the analysis of his face but her beauty – her perfected image, had caught him off guard. The blond strands of her hair glistened under the warm rays of the western sun and his eyes followed her delicate hands as she went to lasso some loose strands that had escaped her clasp due to the light wind brushing through.

There was something vaguely familiar about the woman and as she sent him a subtle pout his eyes rested on her lips and it hit him where he had seen her before.  Heavens!  She was the spitting image of little Cookie.  Stone delivered one more scrutinizing glance over her, and then he raked cold eyes over Hollace.  He had greeted her more like an old lover than a sister-in-law...

Hollace was telling her, “Wait here, love.  I have some papers I need to comb over from my briefcase tonight.”

He left Stone and Cie to the silence and she felt uncomfortable as he continued to glare at her.  Trying to soften the tenseness she innocently offered her hand to him over the iron fence.  Being a small woman she had to stretch for he was still mounted on the large horse.

“It is very nice to meet you, Mister Kiley,” she attempted and her hand remained suspended in the light breeze.

Stone glanced at the ringless hand, the fairness of her skin shaking his thoughts, his mind spiraling back in time…

Fire touched Cie’s cheeks for she was aware that Mr. Kiley held no intention of accepting her hand in friendship and slowly she brought it back to her.  No doubt she had offended him, for his eyes were set and his thoughts seemed far away, obviously disgusted by her friendly display.

His repugnant attitude should have repelled her interest and like Paige she should feel a little respite for this man – but oddly enough she didn’t.  His aloofness intrigued her and she was oddly piqued by this exhibition of complete banishment for her.

Hollace was mumbling something as he searched for his briefcase in the car, yet Cie concentrated on Stone, her eyes deftly moving over his iron-like face, finally resting on the leather mask.  She was amused as his hand went up to touch the leather again, as if reassuring that it was still in place.

She contemplated her sister’s assessment of Stone, just a few short minutes ago. Hideous?  Not hardly!  Cie found him extremely attractive, even with the mask stretching his face, encircling one eye.

It suddenly dawned on her that his aloof attitude originated from the mask, that he was self-conscious of his marred stance.  Her heart mellowed and she offered a reassuring smile but was rewarded by a harsher, more grueling look than before.  She felt confused, realizing that his impatience did indeed mirror his disgust for her wan show of pity.  Whatever had instilled such hated fury within him she frantically wondered?

Stone forced his thoughts back to the present, meaning to accept her hand but it had vanished.  Then she had the audacity to fling him a look of pity – how damned humiliating! She liked to look all right, seeming unable to snap her gaze from the intriguing mask. Former Girl Scout – future Mother Teresa material no doubt, he silently mocked delivering what he felt was a chastising look.
