- Chapter Nine - Page 69
-
- Stone felt it best to remain silent. He was
still trying to find a hiding place for the "armor
family" that she had given him and Cie as a wedding
gift.
-
- Cookie’s music was floating up from the stream, an
eerie melodious sound that was quite good for a child
her age.
-
- “She plays well,” he offhandedly eased out.
-
- “She should; she’s been taking music lessons since
the day she was born,” Paige eased out in a mocking
tone.
-
- The words hit him like a brick wall. The day
she was born…
-
- He jerked his head around sharply as she continued
to mock, “You know, I think that I will put a curse
on your firstborn child. It is not quite right
to have a child and find it to be a mirror of your sister!
Of course, unless she is your twin,” she went
on to reason, again with drawn brows. She continued,
“I think I will have your firstborn be a replica of
me! Why, turnabout is fair play, right my dear
brother-in-law?” She popped him hard on the back,
Stone going forward and almost losing his balance for
she held the strength of an ox!
- In confusion, he asked, “I don’t quite get what you
are saying. The child looks like Cie because she…”
- Paige lifted her brows, Stone seeming to suddenly
captivate her attention. “Why do go on,” she encouraged
him. “It seems that the elderberry is speaking
for you, dear William,” she mocked, her gaze a curious
one.
-
- He raked a hand though his hair, tired of the games.
Obviously, Paige was out to torment him. Trickery
seemed to run in the family.
-
- Losing it, he told her in a strained tone, “Look,
I am not a blind idiot. I know that Cookie is
Cie’s and Hollace’s child.”
-
- There; he had said it! Finally, said it and it felt damned good,
too! “Furthermore, I realize that you don’t like
me, never have and never will. Therefore, I refuse to
not sit here and swallow your cruel mockery!”
-
- Paige gasped, drawing a delicate, manicured hand
to her throat. In a shocked voice she drawled
out slowly, “My God….you haven’t slept with her, have
you?”
-
- Stone tensed his thick brows and shook his head.
“What are you talking about?”
-
- “Cie – you idiot! My sister. You haven’t
slept with her, have you?” she repeated in an impatient
tone.
-
- What business is that of yours – ”
-
- “You are an idiot!” she tossed out, setting her goblet
on the blanket roughly and rising.
-
- Stone did likewise and rose to tower over her. If
would not do, her looking down on him like some queen.
-
- “How dare – ”
-
- “William! If you’d slept with her then you’d
know how ridiculous your assumption is! Wherever
did you get such a notion?”
-
- Stone reached and grasped one of her arms, his touch
desperate. “Just what are you saying, Paige?”
-
- She tugged free, both hands going to her temple.
“Cie is a virgin, you – you idiot! She's
never been with a man before – not even with that other
idiot, Mitch – who like you, certainly did not deserve
her! God, my poor sister! I – what have
you done to her, William? She adores the ground
that you walk on – ”
-
- “She adores your husband,” he tossed back, unable
to absorb her words. “So much so that she has
been spending the last few weeks entertaining him in
your garden!”
-
- Paige drew her hands into two tiny fists by her side
and growled at him, never feeling this angry in her
life. “You idiot of a man! Hollace has been
out of the country for almost a month now!”
-
- Stone batted his eyes in confusion, the situation
finally dawning on him.
-
- “A month you say?”
-
- “Yes! And – and I don’t know why little Cookie
took on my sister’s traits rather than my own, but I
assure you that she is my daughter!”
-
- “God, what have I done?” he eased out, searching
the meadows for Charles, the Shire.
-
- He assessed Paige’s angry face and once more for
reassurance he asked, “Are you being truthful with me?
Or – or is this some kind of payback for the past?”
-
- Paige narrowed her eyes at him and resettled on the
blanket. He watched impatiently as she poured
herself another glass of elderberry wine, purposely
taking her time to answer him.
-
- When he was ready to pull her tonsils out, she responded
in a slow tone, “Yes, dear. I am playing with
your mind. Cookie is Cie’s and Hollace’s child.
Why they are like two magnets – inseparable. Why
do you think I moved to England? And now, she’s
next door – a constant threat.” She glanced into
his face and mocked in a tight tone, “Is that what you
wanted to hear?”
-
- Stone lowered himself onto the blanket beside her.
“I beg you, please tell me the truth. I
am hopelessly lost without her love.”
