- Chapter Nine - Page 68
-
- He reduced the Shire to a trot as the lazy creek
came into sight. Lancelot barked, alerting him
to the strangers in the midst.
-
- Paige and Cookie came into view. There was
a large white blanket laid out on the floor of the green
meadow spread with a picnic fit for a king.
-
- “Uncle William!’ Cookie yelled to him in a cheerful
tone.
-
- Stone’s face tightened in amusement as Paige rose
and advanced towards the Shire.
-
- He graced her with a look and murmured, “William?”
-
- “Yes, I decided that Uncle Stone is too harsh for
a child’s lip, so I decided that Cookie should use your
given name,” Paige wheeled out smoothly. She glanced
at the Shire and suggested, “Why don’t you give Charles
a break and dismount? Cookie has been anxious
to see you again.” She glanced at his companion
and eased out in an appreciative tone, “He’s beautiful,
William. I did not know you had a dog.”
-
- Stone dismounted Charles and was pounced on immediately
by Cookie. She practically jumped into his arms,
then wrapped her own tiny arms around his neck and plastered
his good cheek with kisses.
-
-
- “I missed you, Uncle William! You never come
to see me with Aunt Cie! Why not?”
-
- Stone laughed and lovingly tweaked her nose, which
was a miniature of Cie’s.
-
- “Well, we’ll have to remedy that, won’t we? Why
don’t you get with your aunt and see if a sleep over
can be arranged? Would you like that, darling?”
-
- Cookie nodded and Stone set her down. She immediately
went to pet Lancelot who seemed content to be preened
by her.
-
- Stone was glancing at the two and was shocked as
Paige grabbed his hand and told him, "Come along
and sit with me a while, dear brother-in-law.”
-
- Before he knew what was happening she had plopped
him down on her blanket. He landed with a thud,
something hard going into his backside. He lifted
himself and heard Paige exclaim, “Just Cookie’s flute.”
-
- She reached underneath him, jerked it away and called
out to Cookie, “Darling, take the flute that your father
made you and go play for the fish. Okay?”
-
- Cookie skipped over and as she took the flute she
asked, “Can I play for Lancelot instead? I think
the fish are tired of my music.”
-
- Paige drifted a laugh through the meadow, reminding
the silent Stone of his unpredictable wife.
-
- “Sure, darling. Just don’t go too far away,
okay? There are lots of wolves in the meadow and
I would not want you to get eaten up!”
-
- Stone winced his lips deciding not to correct her.
The only wolf in this meadow was her husband,
Hollace.
-
- Struck with his realization, he found himself suddenly
softening to this woman. Whether he cared to admit
it or not, they shared the same fate.
-
- “Beautiful dog,” she again complimented as she picked
out two crystal goblets from her picnic basket. She
was pouring out some burgundy liquid that Stone couldn’t
quite identify.
-
- “A birthday gift from Cie,” he informed, hesitantly
accepting the goblet as she handed it to him.
-
- “It’s okay, it’s not poisoned,” she assured taking
a drink as if to give meaning to her words. “My
own concoction; elderberry wine.”
-
- He relented, finding the drink quite good. “Surprisingly,
it is very good,” he told her, feeling a bit odd sharing
drink with a woman he wasn’t particularly fond of.
-
- “Thank you…I think,” Paige mocked in a light amused
tone. She studied him at length and then drawled,
“Your birthday, eh? Well, I wasn’t apprised or
I would have thrown you a party myself. Your loss
– especially the gift I would have given you. And
as you know, I give fantastic gifts,” she continued
with lifted brows, quite serious regarding the matter.
