- Chapter Nine - Page 67
-
- As he neared the sitting room he could detect candles
flickering from the doorway and as he entered his eyes
widened with shock.
-
- Cie looked radiant, dressed in a sapphire gown that
brought out those disturbing blue hues of her eyes.
She was wearing that same necklace that she had
on the night of the homecoming party that Hollace and
Paige had thrown for her. It only enhanced the
fair beauty of her skin.
-
- Stone felt as if he could stand and gaze at her for
an eternity, for her beauty was captivating and unsurpassed.
-
- “Happy Birthday, darling,” she whispered as the flames
of the candles seemed to dance around the room – so
many candles that he was a bit leery; perhaps he had
entered a room in the cathedral rather than his own
home.
-
- His eyes widened in surprise; and yes, she was right
– it was his birthday. Until now, he had put the
matter to the back of his mind. That she had managed
this surprise touched him. Perhaps….she really
did care.
-
- My, the table was sagging from the gifts. Obviously,
his devious little bride had also raided the shops in
town without his knowledge.
- And then she was beside him, her lavender-scented
perfume enticing his nostrils as her lips pressed against
his own hard ones with a loving kiss.
-
- She pulled reluctantly away and attempted a smile
and he noted her trembling lips. It was almost
enough to make him break and meld to her, but her damned
relationship with Hollace was holding him at bay. If
only she would leave him alone and be his entirely.
-
- Was that too much to hope for? He wasn’t expecting
a sovereign relationship – but a monogamous one, hell
yes!
-
- She coaxed him to the table and they shared cake
and champagne; then he consoled her by opening the barrage
of gifts she had bought him. They were magnificent
as well; among them a beautiful carved knife, a heavy
wool winter coat, a hand-tooled leather saddle, and
a velour bathrobe with matching Tasmanian devil house
shoes – which had managed to pull a smile to his lips.
-
- This is what he adored about her – her ability to
amuse him, to make him forget his problems and enjoy
life. But, he couldn’t enjoy life – not with Cie
pinning for Hollace.
-
- He watched her through the flickering candles as
she rung a dainty silver bell, telling him, “One last
surprise, my darling.”
-
- Mulligan entered and by his side stood the most regal
looking dog that Stone had ever saw. He was truly
a magnificent specimen.
-
- “His name is Lancelot,” Cie managed and she tensed
as Stone went over and knelt in front of him to examine
his gift at length.
-
- “An English Deerhound,” he eased out and Cie could
tell nothing from his tone – whether he liked the dog,
or not.
-
- “He’s fully castle-broken, sir,” she heard Mulligan
mumble.
-
- Stone nodded thoughtfully, then accepted the leash
from Mulligan who then disappeared from the room, leaving
them to their privacy.
-
- Stone turned around to face her, feeling as if his
face were going to crack. He felt totally drained
of energy as Cie told him, “I love you, Stone. I
love you more than anything in the world, please know
that if nothing else.”
-
- At the moment he was incapable of speech and Cie
was sensitive enough to realize he needed space.
-
- He took Lancelot and headed immediately for the stables.
Somehow he had to find a way to redeem himself
with grace. It was becoming more and more evident
that it was going to be necessary to confront Cie regarding
Hollace. But how?
-
- Lancelot ran with him as they chased the wind through
the meadows.
-
- Stone was seized by his troubled thoughts, realizing
he was caught in the web. Even more troubling
was the fact that he did not want to be free. Perhaps
he couldn’t have all of Cie, but he’d settle for whatever
she had to offer. And yes, the only way to start
anew was to confront her on the matter. Nonetheless,
he wanted her; wanted whatever life he could make with
her, Hollace or not.
