- Chapter Nine - Page 66
-
- Cie viewed the hallooed sun overhead from Melrose
Castle. It was a warm and humid day, a light breeze
radiating off the blue lake in the distance.
-
- It was an unusually sultry day for early summer.
Almost a month had passed since the disastrous
Hawaiian honeymoon. Time had seemed to crawl these
days.
-
- Cie sat in the chaise by the table containing the
colorful umbrella as thoughts of her beginning in England
soared through her mind. Melrose Castle was one
place where she could concentrate without Stone’s foreboding
form interfering with her thoughts.
-
- And Melrose Castle would be empty until later this
evening. Hollace had been out of the country for
the past three weeks, and Paige and Cookie were sharing
a day by the brook with a picnic.
-
- Unfortunately, her relationship with Stone had taken
a downhill slide. He was so evasive these days.
Had she known that removing his mask would have
thrown him into this deep of a chasm, she would have
never touched it! If only she could go back –
could remedy the disaster! But she couldn’t.
-
- As for their marriage, it had yet to be consummated.
If things continued on this course, Cie had no
alternative but to ask Stone for an annulment. Her
hopes and aspirations of making him love her were swiftly
dissipating. And she had tried so hard! It
was becoming evident that one did not make another fall
in love with them. It was a natural thing, not
forced but an earned trust.
-
-
- Yes, too late she had underestimated love, for love
was not something made, rather something given from
within one’s own heart. Therefore, the situation
was practically hopeless for how could Stone love her
if he did not trust her? If only she could go
back and erase that fitful decision to remove his mask.
Had she only known the torment that innocent deed
would cost her, she would have done things so differently.
-
- Today, she would be grasping at straws, hoping that
Stone would see that she truly cared for him…truly loved
him. For once, she longed for him to want her
as she wanted him.
-
- For back at Ten Oaks, Mulligan was busy organizing
the birthday party that she had secretly planned for
Stone. There was less than two hours to complete
the surprise, for Stone would be returning from his
meeting in town.
-
- Cie had been observant enough to mentally note his
date of birth during the paperwork involving their marriage.
So, she had actually been planning the event for
weeks now. In fact, she had ordered his birthday
cake on the same day that she had ordered their wedding
cake. It was devil’s food, his favorite according
to Mulligan on that first day she had visited Ten Oaks.
-
- There were balloons and colorful carnations mingled
with baby’s breath that were being spaced in the cozy
sitting room of the castle. A bottle of champagne
was to be set in ice for the occasion, as well as candles
and soft music. Cie had chosen a soft Irish ballad
collection to be played.
-
- In addition, she had discretely completed a shopping
trip last Saturday, and several presents were to be
arranged around the cake.
-
- However, her most skeptical gift to him would be
Lancelot, a Scottish Deerhound that she had fallen instantly
in love with at the pet shop that day. Her visit
had been with purpose, for she felt that an animal would
soften their relationship. This was her last play
of the cards, her last attempt at this losing game to
secure her husband’s love.
-
- As for the dog, he was beautiful, fully grown, trained,
and most importantly - as Mulligan had put it,
‘castle broken’.
-
- Dear Mulligan had been hiding the dog for almost
a week now and had told her this morning that he and
his misses had become quite attached to him. She
only hoped that Stone would feel the same.
-
- Cie had decided to make the affair a private one.
However, she had purposely ordered a large cake,
wanting to share with Mulligan and the rest of the servants
for having to go out of their way on such short notice
to complete the preparations.
-
- She glanced at the sky, the sun beginning to steer
towards the west.
-
- Making fast tracks back to Ten Oaks, she anticipated
the evening’s events and Stone’s probable reaction.
This evening she would dress with great care.
One last time, with great calculated care…
-
- Stone entered the castle, the heavenly aroma of Mulligan’s
bar-b-que meeting him. He was hungry, too, but
even more hungry to see his wayward bride.
-
- For the past several weeks she had been making a
beeline to Melrose Castle and he assumed it was to meet
her unrequited love, Hollace. This thought shattered
his heart for no matter how hard he tried, he just couldn’t
get Cie out of his system.
-
- Then he heard the music, a beloved Irish ballad and
curiously he followed the sound.
