 Chapter Eight - Page 62

“Stone!”

 

“Find it – give it back to me,” he ordered, his tone absolute.

 

Cie released him, then sighed as she went to collect the mask.  Handing it to him she said, “As you wish.”

 

Once he had secured it in place he realized that she had not only removed the mask but his clothes as well.  She was small, but she had managed to dress him in the blue silk pajamas.

 

Before he could protest she told him, “The hotel doctor was here and thought it best to remove that,” she pointed to his mask, then, “and to change you into something comfortable.  He also gave you a large dose of antibiotics.  How do you feel?  Better?”

 

“You are to never touch this again!  Do you understand?” he drawled, pointing to the mask, his tone frightening her.

 

Obviously, she had made him very angry.  Couldn’t he understand that she loved him – that she could care less about how his face looked?

 

She tried to explain once more, saying, “Stone, it was the doctor’s suggestion.  As for your face, I don’t care how you look!  I love you.  Might I suggest – ”

“Such liberties, Ms. Chantel.  I assume your next suggestion would be to hear about how I landed myself in this condition.  You’ve wanted to know that since the beginning.”

Cie was planted in a sea of shock.  For starters, he had called her by her maiden name, and she felt as if he had actually dismissed her as his wife.

 

“No, please Stone.  I – It is not necessary.  Besides…we – we all have secrets – ”

 

“Yes, we all have secrets,” he mocked, his eyes making a swift search of the room as he tried to locate his shirt and pants.  “Tell you what; I am going to tell you my deepest, darkest secret….then you are going to tell me yours.”

 

“Stone, I would rather not –”

 

Rudely ignoring her he continued, “A little over ten years ago, back in the States, I fell in love.”  He paused, feeling a bit delirious – part he attributed to his illness, and part to his disgust over his lying concubine!  He continued in a viscous tone, “She was beautiful; in fact, the most beautiful woman in the world.  I dare say that anyone could match her beauty in this lifetime.”

 

That hurt; he saw her flinch but for some reason her reaction did not please him.  If truth be known, he considered Cie the most beautiful woman he had ever known.

 

Nonetheless, he cruelly continued, “I will keep it brief.  We were engaged.  One day I was taking a drive on a county back-road when low and behold, what did I see?  It was my intended, and she wasn’t alone.  The fellow she was with had managed to crash the car into a tree. And being the idiot Good Samaritan that I was at the time, I rushed to help.  After I got her free the car burst into flames.  The man was still trapped behind the steering wheel of the car and Diane begged me to save him – said she was in love with the man.”

 

The room became as quiet as death, Cie tortured by his story.

 

“So…you saved him and got burned in more ways than one,” Cie filled in, her heart reaching out to him.  “Stone, I am so sorry – ”

 

“Your turn,” he told her, his voice deadpan.  

 

She winced her mouth, not wanting to play this game with him.  Obviously, he was angry with her for removing his mask.  She loved him – why couldn’t he just accept the fact and move on with life?  She hated it when it was like this – so strained and cruel.  She could hardly bear the animosity that he had suddenly wedged between them.

 

“Your deepest, darkest secret, my dear wife.”

 

Tears seized her eyes and she felt he was purposely being cruel to her when he scolded, “No tears, please.  We’re not babies, are we?”
