Chapter Eight - Page 61
- As the miles clicked away, as much as he hated to
admit that Cie’s assumption was correct, he was feeling
much worse. His stomach felt tight and queasy
and his head was now throbbing. Body aches too….
-
- The car had been silent for quite some time.
-
- Stone told her, “Look, I will be fine as soon as
we reach the airport. I can rest on the plane.
Just consider the matter settled if you want to
help me, okay?”
-
- He caught her opening her mouth to protest, then
she clamped it firmly shut again, honoring his request.
Now that’s how he liked her; silent.
-
- Perhaps continuing the trip wasn’t the greatest idea,
but he needed to get away, to think this matter out.
One thing for certain, he was going to confront
Ms. Goody Two Shoes and get everything out in the open.
He was sick and tired of playing cat and mouse
– and he did not like being the mouse.
-
- Though he was able to rest on the plane, by the time
they reached the Islands his misery was clearly evident.
- A representative of the airline was kind enough to
send a young man with them to assist Cie in settling
into the plush hotel a few blocks away.
-
- Shortly afterwards Stone was violently ill to his
stomach. Cie stayed with him in the bathroom,
then helped him back into bed.
-
- “Oh, darling! You are so ill – I knew we shouldn’t
have come,” she told him as she tucked the covers around
him.
-
-
- He felt like a worm in a cocoon. Trapped; trapped
and unhappy.
-
- “Please, just leave me alone and let me rest, Cie.
I will be fine, really,” he told her, just wanting
to relax against the clean white sheets and sleep.
-
- He must have drifted off. He was locked in
a daze, sensing only shadows about him when Cie’s voice
reached him, her tone seeming hysterical.
-
- “Hollace, I am concerned – ”
-
- “Why…yes, darling. No. No. Okay….look
– I must go now. He’s stirring. I will try
to call you again later and let you know.”
-
- Stone lapsed back into a deep sleep. When he
awoke Cie was holding his hand, sitting in a chair beside
the bed. She was sleeping, her neck cocked
to one side and he knew she couldn’t be comfortable
in that position.
-
- He flinched as her eyes blinked open, locking with
his.
-
- “Oh, darling, you are finally awake!” She sounded
relieved for some reason.
-
- Why? Why did she care? It was Hollace
that thrilled her, not himself.
-
- She leaned forward, her hand sanding over his forehead.
"Fever’s down, too.”
-
- She poured him a glass of water from the bedside
tray and continued to talk, “Can you drink this? It
still has ice in it.”
-
- He accepted the glass, wishing she would quit acting
like his Angel of Mercy. He did not want anything
from her, not pity, sympathy – not even an heir at this
point!
-
- His hand went up to touch his mask and he instantly
realized it was gone. “Hell!”
-
- His hand continued to shield his face as he felt
humiliated and outraged!
-
- “Stone, it is okay,” she assured him, taking his
hand and trying to draw it away from his face.
-
- “How could you? Who gave you the right – ”
