 Chapter Eight - Page 60

Both Hollace and Cie seemed totally unaware of his anger, which he continued to hold in check by a thin thread.

But my, they were happy.  As Hollace had phrased it, he had won.  The pity of it all was that neither of them would ever learn he had discovered the unforgiving truth.

“Stone, old boy, I have something to give you and your new lady….a wedding gift,” Hollace began, patting him affectionately on the back.

Stone involuntarily stiffened, wondering how Hollace could do this to him.  He had seemed a man of great ethics.

Hollace continued in a cheery voice, “I want you and Cie to have the Shires – and no, I will not take no for an answer.  It is my wedding gift to both of you.”

Stone was drenched with a multitude of emotions, the utmost being shock.  From the shadows of his thoughts he glimpsed Cie kissing Hollace appreciatively on the cheek and thanking him.

Then Hollace patted him heartily on the back and laughed, “Why, Stone, you are bloody  speechless!”
Stone attempted to recover, stumbling miserably over his words as he addressed Hollace, “Why….I am not quite sure what to say.”

“You’ll say thank you, of course – especially after you see what that wife of mine is giving you.  You do like suits of armors, don’t you?  You’ll both look stunning on the Shires.”  He laughed, winked at them, then faded into the crowd shortly afterwards.

“Darling?  Are you all right?” Cie asked him, suddenly concerned; her husband looked ashen and withdrawn.

He managed a nod, then finally managed, “Small headache.  You know, getting married is very stressful.”

Cie laughed, then led him into the crowd.  This was indeed, the happiest day of her life.

Stone allowed Cie to lead him into the mob.  This was indeed, the most miserable day of his life – superseding his accident.

Hours later, Cie glanced at her husband as they sped along the motorway.  His forehead was drenched in sweat and he looked deeper in thought than usual.

Stone’s face tightened as he felt his new bride’s eyes on him.  This would be much easier if he wasn’t so drawn to her, so attracted to her beauty, her charms and her ways.  How could he have allowed himself to be trapped in this situation?  She was beautiful, captivating – yes, but so was the Monarch Butterfly, but he hadn’t wanted to marry that!  Without realizing he issued a frustrated sigh.

“Stone?  Are you okay?”

But my, she sure sounded concerned, he silently mocked.  And hell no he wasn’t okay!

“Damnable headache,” he murmured, wishing he could make her disappear like a genie.

Cie continued to observe his face, her ears taking in the soft hum of the radio that drummed out a ballad from the late sixties.

Tensing her brows she drawled slowly, “Stone, you don’t look well; are you sure you are not taking ill?”

She drew up a hand and brushed his dark cheek before he had time to protest.

“Darling, you have a fever,” she informed, deciding now that the Hawaiian honeymoon was not a good idea.  “Stone, we don’t have to go – ”

“Ssshhh, I am fine,” he told her, pulling away, not wanting to feel her hands on him.

God, he would have been better off with Judy Harper.  At least she was forthright in her intentions.  He knew it was his money she wanted.
