Chapter Seven - Page 52

Cie squared her shoulders and told him, “I am fighting for you, risking everything to win you.  I will sign away any rights to your fortune; I will freely leave my own country; my own business and I will even give you an heir.  What more is there?”

His thoughts were soaring; she was within reach and he was so tempted to take her.

He asked, “What will you do after you bear me a child?”

Her eyes widened and she told him without hesitating, “You still don’t fully understand what I am saying to you.  I love you, Stone, and I always will.  I want to be with you forever – that would be my only condition.”

They were distracted as Mulligan tapped on the door then slowly entered at Stone’s conveyance.

“The lady Judy Harper is here to see you, sir,” he informed, his mood even more solemn than before.

Stone tore his gaze from her and in a stiff tone instructed Mulligan, “Tell Ms. Harper that  I will not be needing her.  The wedding is off.  I have found a more suitable bride.”
Mulligan’s eyes curiously gazed over Cie, his face immediately brightening.
Stone wrote out a check then handed it to him saying, “This should more than compensate for Ms. Harper’s trouble.  And Mulligan, tell her she can take it or leave it; that’s my final offer.”

Mulligan nodded curtly then left them.

Stone turned and addressed Cie, her face a mixture of shock and gladness.  “It will be several weeks, perhaps months before everything can be arranged.  In addition, you will need to wrap up your own affairs in the States and do everything to make the wedding legal.”

Cie nodded, feeling completely drained but glad for her victory.

She neared him and she knew it was with great effort that he allowed her to pull him to her.  “I meant what I said, Stone.  I love you.”

She dusted his firm unyielding lips with a kiss, then headed for the door.  As an afterthought, she turned and told him with a slight smile, “I am sure that Hollace will welcome me as a neighbor but I am not so certain of that sister of mine.  She can be quite mule-headed when she wants to be,” she said, thinking just how truly wonderful the woman really was.  Smart too.

Stone’s face immediately darkened, confusing her in the process.  Then she remembered how much he disliked her sister.

She paused and faced him, curiously wondering why he had chosen her over Judy.

“Stone?  Why – why did you choose me over Judy Harper?” she dared to inquire.
