- Chapter Seven - Page 51
-
- That pulled a laugh from Cie and by the time Paige
was finished, her spirits were high once again, her
confidence returned ten-fold.
-
- She opted to walk to Ten Oaks, refusing both Hollace’s
and Book’s offer to drive her there. She needed
some space to think and Paige was smart enough to recognize
that need, telling the men such.
-
- The walk was a short one. Mulligan greeted
her, not his usual friendly self. He seemed almost
as depressed as she had earlier. Cie felt it had
a good deal to do with the announcement of the engagement.
Judy Harper was certain to be a hussy to work
for. She did not envy Mulligan one bit!
-
- “I must speak with Stone. Is he in today?”
-
- He nodded and informed, “Yes, but you will not have
long to see him. Ms. Harper, his er…fiancée, shall
be here within the hour. Some…legal documents
to sign before the…wedding tomorrow,” he elated with
difficulty.
-
- Cie nodded and he continued, “Please follow me. He
is in the study.”
- Cie did as he instructed, her heart beating wildly
in her chest.
-
-
- She must be crazy, attempting such insanity. Nonetheless,
this was her final chance. There were only two
things to lose; her pride and Stone. At this point,
her pride held no significance.
-
- Mulligan announced her presence and then immediately
left them.
-
- Stone’s face relayed brief shock, then he motioned
her into a leather seat, taking one adjacent to her
as she settled herself.
-
- “This is a surprise, Cie,” he eased out, his mood
concealed as usual. “What is it that you need?
I am expecting someone – ”
-
- “Yes, Judy Harper I believe,” she filled in and he
lifted his brows, amused that she had guessed so accurately.
-
- What in the devil could she possibly want? Her
presence certainly had him confused. The atmosphere
always seemed to be laced with mystery where Cie was
involved. And her timing was terrible. He
needed this last remnant of solitude before Judy’s arrival.
He wasn’t relishing signing away his life at the
moment and needed a bit of time to come to terms with
the unsavory situation.
-
- He glared at her and echoed, “Yes, Ms. Harper will
be arriving at Ten Oaks shortly. What do you need,
Cie?”
-
- She gathered a deep breath and told him in a rush,
“You - I need you, Stone.”
-
- His eyes widened in shock and she continued before
her courage failed her. “If you must marry someone,
please let it be me. I am more than willing.”
-
- Stone stood, her words obviously a shock. “Why?
Money?”
-
- Then it stuck him - the real reason. Hollace.
To be near Hollace. He was a fool to allow
her to continue; the smart thing would be to send her
away. People – a lot of people could get hurt
– would get hurt.
-
- “You – it is you,” she assured in a soft tone, almost
sounding sincere to Stone. “Somehow, some way
I have fallen in love with you – ”
-
- “No! That’s not possible!” he told her, coming
to her and pulling her to him to confront her. “Why
do you choose to torment me? What do you want
from me?”
-
- Cie shook her head, tears flying to her blue eyes.
“I assure you, Stone, I truly love you.” She
tugged at his shirt, begging, “Please, I have asked
you once, and I will ask again, if you must marry someone,
marry me.”
-
- The room went silent, Stone unable to speak for the
moment as he stood wrestling with his thoughts.
-
- “Look, you are aware that Judy doesn’t want you…only
your money – ”
-
- “And you do not?” he challenged, his face unyielding
and she was unable to gage his emotions through her
curtain of tears.
-
- “No; if you want proof, then I will sign away all
legal rights to your money.”
-
- Stone pushed her gently from him, his voice stiff
as he asked, “You do realize that I don’t love you?”
-
- It was a lie; he’d pined after her for nine long
weeks now – since he’d kissed her that day in the meadows,
the same day he’d fallen hopelessly in love with her.
-
- “Yes…I know that,” she told him, his words like a
dagger to her heart.
-
- “The only thing that I shall desire from you will
be an heir; you understand that?” he asked for confirmation,
his eyes assessing her and he was suddenly positive
that he looked uncertain of himself.
