Chapter Seven - Page 50 Cie swallowed the lump that had suddenly formed in her throat, feeling as if she had lost everything of importance. She put aside the paper, not wanting to learn the sordid details of the arranged event. “Obviously, he failed to send out invitations. He damned well knew what my reaction would be!” Hollace continued to rage. “Why, I ought to rip the Shires from underneath him – be a damned little Indian-giver. I don’t want that hellion within a mile of the Shires! Much less Stone! Idiot man…silly idiot of a man. Obviously, lost his mind…basket case.” Cie excused herself, her voice breaking, then she practically ran to her room and sealed the door. Hollace must have glimpsed her tears for he yelled out after her, but she refused to stop. Once in her room, the floodgates opened and she practically wailed due to her deep sorrow. She did not know how or why she had fallen in love with him. The time element was of no importance either. All she knew is that she wanted Stone more than she had anything in her life. For that matter, she had never asked for much….until now. Hollace had been banging on her door a good hour, trying to coax her into opening the door. He was getting hoarse. Cie had blatantly ignored him, but as she detected a commotion in the hall, then Paige’s shrill voice, to which she relented and unwillingly opened the door. They both stood there, shell-shocked, viewing her drained face. “Darling, what has come over you?” Paige asked, her voice very sympathetic. “Lie down, darling, and let me have a look at you,” Hollace soothed her, helping his wife steer her to the bed. Cie felt broken, incapable of speech, locked in agony, doomed to a slow hell. This was nothing as she had felt when Mitch had ditched her. Or, had she ditched Mitch? Hell, it did not matter! Nothing mattered anymore! At that, she began to bellow again, feeling like a lost and wandering child. Paige tried to calm her as Hollace took her pulse. “Darling, Hollace seems to think that this was brought on by er…the announcement of the er…engagement. Is that correct?” Cie’s eyes sprouted new tears as she managed to give her head a positive shake. “Damn, I thought as much,” Paige eased out in a terse tone. “Well, there’s nothing that I can do about it. Love is a very peculiar matter. You do love him, right?” Cie blubbered a bit more, managing to shake her head positively again. Paige sighed impatiently, then looked at her husband, seeming to draw strength from him. Then she drawled in a mocking, lifeless tone to him, “Looks like you won, dear.”
She returned her attention to Cie. “Good heavens, Cie! You are a fighter – don’t just lay here drowning in pity!” Paige scolded, pulling her up and over to the mirror. She began touching up Cie’s face, motioning a silent Hollace from the room as she steadily worked. “Once I get you rectified you are going to make a little visit to Ten Oaks, understand? You’ve got to see him.” Cie went to speak and Paige silenced her with an index finger. “Ssshhh. Let big sister talk here, okay?” “K,” Cie managed to sniff. Paige tightened her lips and decided, “You’ll wear the yellow sundress and matching sandals. You are quite adorable in that. Why, he will not be able to resist you!” She began brushing Cie’s blond hair that held new highlights due to the warm rays of the summer sun, and told her as she worked, “I know what you are thinking, darling. It’s, what will I tell him, right?” Cie nodded. “You’ll tell him that you love him, of course. And for goodness sake, be bold like a Chantel! How do you think I managed to snare Hollace? Why, the man actually had nothing to do with marrying me!”
