Chapter One - Page 5

“Unpredictable?”

“Yes. Why, the man is quite human to Hollace. In fact, they are great friends,” she informed, seeming totally disgusted with the situation.

The verandah was suddenly silent save the steady bouncing of Cookie’s ball in the distance.  Paige had a way of keeping one on the edge of their seat and leaving them hanging.

Finally, Cie eased out in thought,  “Hum…I have never known you to dislike anyone, Paige.  Nonetheless, if Hollace finds good grace in him, he may be redeemable.”

“Pooh!  You may think so, but Hollace is not perfect,” Paige felt inclined to express, her lips pretending a small pout, her cheeks stained red from excited expression.

Cie turned to fully study her sister, knowing that look.  Paige was hiding something.  "Okay, give.”

“Hum?  Give?” Paige eased out, one manicured hand going up to smooth over her already immaculate coiffeur.

Cie did nothing more than lift her brows.  Paige sighed, then relented, “Okay, I’ll…give.”  Then she paused, Cie feeling as if she were even further on the edge of her seat.  When she would have insisted that Paige continue, her sister finally broke the unnecessary silence.  “One day last summer, Cookie went riding without permission.  She – she took a fall in the lake and…and he rescued her. There.  Now, drink your tea, dear – but I must insist that you at least try the hot tea. It is very nice – hot and calming – ”

“What?  Paige!  You – you never mentioned this to me – ”

“Yes, yes I know,” she tossed out, cutting her off.  After a short sigh she continued in a calmer tone, “Hollace wanted to call but I did not want to alarm you.”

Cie couldn’t conceal her injured feelings and Paige patted her forearm appearing a bit remorseful over her decision in retrospect.  “Dear, you were going through that awful time with that dreadful Mitch person.  I did not feel that you needed anything else on your plate; you do understand?”

Cie tried to concentrate on the conversation rather than her injured feelings.  “I suppose.  But, if that man rescued Cookie, then why do you despise him?  I would think that you would be eternally indebted to him.”

Paige took another thoughtful sip of the tea and Cie had to wonder if it was laced with spirits.  The woman seemed to pull courage from the hot liquid.

Paige continued, “It was his less-than-sterling attitude.  I tried to thank him but he deemed it his responsibility to condemn me unworthy of motherhood – blaming the entire incident on me!  He just stood there glaring at me in his disguise, those black eyes boring into my face – telling me that I did not deserve Cookie – didn’t deserve to be anyone’s mother!  Well,” she paused, grimacing her lovely face as the sun played shadows over the ivory tones of her skin, “I suppose that he might be a bit…envious.”

“Envious?”

Paige nodded.  “He’s very wealthy – his castle is the largest in the land.  Surely you saw it on the drive in today?  The castle to the north that bore the name Ten Oaks?”

Cie shook her memory and relayed, “Yes, I do remember.  It is quite impressive.”

There had been so many captivating sights along the drive – wooded downlands, fields of wildflowers, stately homes, thatched cob and stone cottages, weatherboard houses, quaint parishes – far too much to digest in one drive.

She refocused her thoughts on Paige and continued, “However, after we passed Ten Oaks, Melrose Castle came into view so quickly that I was overwhelmed by its own magnificence.  I had no idea of its vastness, of its sheer grandeur– ”

“Tch…I told you many times about the grandeur of Melrose Castle, dear sister.”  Cie opened her mouth to rebuff her and Paige waived her off.  “Back to our stranger next door.  As I was saying, I believe he is envious.  You see, even with all his fortune he has no heir – probably never will have.  What woman would want the poor marred devil?  Of course, I suppose he could buy a wife – not one of quality, mind you – and surely without beauty and glamour.  But again, what woman in her right mind would willingly want him?  And furthermore, to be totally honest in my opinion, I believe his inability to secure a love interest stems more from his hideous attitude rather than his hideous appearance.”
