Chapter Seven - Page 49 Nine weeks passed; Cie would be leaving in less than a fortnight. It was a Friday morning and Paige had taken Cookie to her scheduled music lesson. Hollace was breakfasting and Cie decided to join him. “Morning, love,” he greeted, rising to seat her across the table from him. Again, he was breakfasting by the pool. Once he had settled himself he told her, “How are you handling Paige? Rather…her questions regarding Roland?” “She’s headstrong, that sister of mine.” “You should have to live with her,” he laughed, continuing to observe her. Cie smiled back at him noting that his head was still damp from his morning swim. He had pulled another late night and would not be going into the office until later today. “Well, I apologize for her trying to pawn Roland onto you. Persistent little puss that she is.” Hollace picked up his fork and concentrated on his orange-colored melon half. His words could not have been closer to the truth. Paige had consistently thrown the subject of Roland onto her, especially these last few days – perhaps realizing that time was running out. There had only been the one date and Roland had not contacted her since then. Maybe he was smart enough to realize it had been a disastrous evening. “It is not going to work, Hollace. The date with Roland was a disaster. He’s a nice man, but not my type.” It was true. The evening had been almost embarrassing, Roland trying to romance her with his lifeless photographs, Cie herself wallowing in her depressive thoughts of Stone's rejection. “I thought as much,” Hollace echoed, taking up the morning paper. “You know, you were right about the man’s photographic abilities. He brought his portfolio to share that evening – most of them taken at what appeared to be a circus.” She tapped her fork to her forehead in recollection, then mocked, “There was the one of the dirty backside of an elephant, and one of a child eating cotton candy that I remember in particular.” She paused and told him thoughtfully, “You know, that would not have been half bad if he would shot one of say…an elderly person with the cotton candy. And, if he’d made it a sharp shot rather than a dull one. And if he hadn’t beheaded the subject,” she added thoughtfully. “Damn, you are good,” Hollace teased, his eyes flying back to the paper. They enjoyed the comfortable silence as they ate, then Hollace startled her as he ripped off an angry four-letter expletive. “Hollace? What is wrong?” she probed, curious over the root of his anger. He cursed again and tossed the paper in front of her, a beautiful woman captured on the front page. Her eyes widened. Judy Harper. She would recognize that beak anywhere!
Hollace rose and paced the tiled area surrounding the pool, raking a hand through his brown cap of hair, continuing to issue profanities as Cie tried to concentrate on the headlines of the newspaper. She read, “The Lady Judith Elisa Harper and Sir William S. Kiley to wed tomorrow morning at Ten Oaks.” “What a fool! A pig-headed fool!” Hollace continued to rage as he paced the area like a caged she-lion in heat. “Um…William? Is he um…any kinship to Stone?” silently praying that there were two Judy Harpers in the area. Perhaps a twin? Suddenly, it was becoming very difficult to concentrate for some reason. She felt as if her heart had been thrown out of her chest and into the back of her throat! Hollace paused and glared at her. “William is Stone’s given name. And we can all make a good guess why his middle name stuck with him instead! Stone-headed….moron!”
