 Chapter Six - Page 45

Her mind wandered endlessly, trying to find an open range or a hiding place – anywhere Stone could not learn of her newly discovered feelings for him.

How?  Why?  My God, she barely knew the man….yet, she knew him perhaps better than anyone else in the world.  She could relate to his pain, his rejection, and his absolution from life…from people.  He was like her, burying his life in his work, racing to get away from the crowd.  Even in all his finery, there was something very simplistic about him.

Stone viewed her, thinking that she had the face of an angel.  She had done it to him again, going silent.  He looked at her moist pink lips, yearning to dust them with a warm kiss.  She sure looked kissable….damned kissable.

Hum, wonder what her reaction would be to that?  Probably a slap on the face and though she was small, he would bet that she packed a big wallop.  She was an intense little thing – intensely emotional and passionate.  Passionate?  Yes, he’d bet the bank on that.

Collecting his out of control thoughts he grated out, “I know that the Lady Judy Harper has no interest in me; it is my fortune that draws her to the flame.”

Cie lifted her brows, somewhat shocked by his open admission and his awareness of the witch’s intentions.  And Judy Harper was no lady!

He continued, “I am not getting any younger.  Judy can provide me with an heir – which is all that I require of her.  After such, she will be free to leave.”

Cie graced his face, wishing that he would kiss her.  Did he know – had he guessed how she felt about him?  Surely her feelings were written on her face, no matter how hard she was trying to conceal them.  Why couldn’t he just shut up rambling about his intended and take her offering instead?

She eased out through her muddled thoughts, “She would just…just leave her child?  It…it could be a very difficult thing to do.”

Stone immediately became withdrawn and Cie was suddenly put away from him.  Obviously, she had irritated him.  However, someone needed to point this matter out – put things in prospective.

There was a good possibility that Judy would not be able to leave her child – no matter what she had told her friend at the pub, and no matter how many legal documents Stone would have drawn up.  And she was certain he would do that.

Then again, Judy had mentioned that she might take the money and abandon Stone, without bearing an heir.  She did not suppose that he would be too happy about that.

They rode back to the stables in silence, Cie musing her thoughts and Stone trapped in his own living hell, wondering what idiotic notion had sparked his desire to kiss Cie.  Temporary insanity, without a doubt!

Obviously, she knew what it was like, leaving a child behind.  It had been written all over her innocent-looking, deceptive face; he had not missed her pained expression as he had held her close to him.  Not even sweet Cookie had been capable of melting her ice maiden heart.

Once they were back at the stables, Stone stiffly told her, “Mulligan will take you home.  Good day, Ms. Chantel.”

He directed his steps toward the towering castle in the distance and Cie had to practically run to catch up with him.

She managed to turn him around by touching his shirtsleeve again and was rewarded by an unsavory look.

Licking her pink lips, she plied, “I enjoyed the ride, Stone.  When can we go again?”

His dark eyes dusted her small form and she stood nervously enduring his lingering gaze.  His eyes reached her own again and he said, “We can’t.  I will have to tell Hollace to secure you another instructor.”

He turned from her again but halted as she bravely accused, “You are frightened of me, aren’t you?”

He twisted his face to her, the mask hidden from her view and she had never considered him more handsome.
