Chapter Six - Page 44 His thoughts continued as he watched her preening over the willow tree. She seemed fascinated by it for some reason, this simple product of nature. She sure wasn’t like Judy. Money did not seem to impress her. Of all the masterpieces in his castle she had taken to the silly piece of olive wood he had picked up at an American county fair. The thought suddenly struck him as humorous and again, he unwillingly laughed. Cie had dropped the willow branch and her attention was occupied with watching the horses drink from the cool rippling brook. When she heard Stone’s laughter she turned curiously. Again, his face was completely transformed by laughter and she decided she liked him this way. “Care to share?” she smiled, realizing that she was beginning to relax in his presence. “No, I don’t,” he confessed, trying to wipe away the grin. He managed to sober a bit then bragged, “You are doing magnificently. You are a very fast learner, Cie. I am sure that Hollace will be pleased.” “Thanks,” she murmured, not knowing exactly what to do. A mental image of Cie studying the olive wood again crossed his mind and Stone broke out in another laugh, unable to contain himself and not knowing why the thought stuck him as so humorous. God, he hadn’t laughed like this in years. He felt a bit like a fickle schoolboy. “Stone? Are…are you laughing at me?” Cie plied. She was beginning to smile herself, as his laughter was contagious. “No, never,” he assured, laughing all the harder. “You look very handsome when you laugh, Stone,” she eased out with a smile. “You should do it more often.” Her compliment dazed him and he immediately sobered. Perhaps he had heard incorrectly. Handsome? Was this woman crazed? If he had not been so shocked he would have bolted out laughing again. He finally managed to tell her, ‘But my, you are a blunt little thing.” “Hum,” she mumbled, her thoughts raging about in her head. “Speaking of blunt, I must ask if you still intend to marry Ms. Judy Harper?” There. She had said it. Now, that wasn’t so hard, was it? When he gazed at her in disbelief, she justified her question by telling him, “It is one of those unasked questions you accused me of. Well, do you?” She paused, then tacked on, “Besides, I did promise to take the photos. Just trying to line up all my ducks, I suppose.”
Stone bit at one corner of his handsome mouth then returned his gaze to the mounts at the brook. “I am waiting for an answer from her. In fact, I expect that Ms. Harper will let me know today at our meeting over lunch.” Yes, the old witch would probably tell him that she had accepted his offer. She had to wonder what Stone’s reaction would be; happy, apprehensive, delighted? She would have liked to ask where they were dining just so she could eavesdrop. But no, that wasn’t right. She went to him and tugged at the blue cotton sleeve of his shirt, the gesture surprising him and he immediately jerked his attention back onto her. She told him, “A probable fiancée and you address her by a last name? It is very formal for a couple in love.” He pulled her to him, his face no more than an inch from hers. “Who mentioned love? I told you before, it is an heir that I seek. Besides, you must remember you are in England. It’s that formality thing.” A sudden breeze floated across the meadow floor quenching the sudden flash of heat Cie had felt rise to her cheeks. She must look like some idiot clown and she was suddenly very uncomfortable under his close gaze. However, she did not move. Instead, she absorbed the scent of his aftershave, the faint fragrance of laundry detergent in his shirt and the sweetness of his warm breath as it swept across her flush face. She supposed that it was in this instant she realized her love for him. Love? Oh, heavens! Yes, love….
