Chapter Six - Page 43

Stone remained silent along the pathway and she allowed such, deciding it best to let him cumulate his thoughts. Though his manner projected no insecurities, she could sense an inner restlessness.  That restlessness would only grow when the vindictive Judy Harper entered his domain, she suddenly decided amid her deep, secretive thoughts.

A handsome auburn-headed man was tending to the last of the mounts and as he turned to address Stone his eyes shifted to Cie, lingering on the curves of the riding suit.

He grinned and told Stone as he still observed her, “Almost ready, Mr. Kiley.  Will you need me to accompany you and the lady?”  He paused, tilted a worn black felt derby and offered, “Pleased to meet you, lassie.”  His voice was heavily accented.

But Stone’s voice was tight and to the point.  “Seth, you have your orders for the day.  Surely your hearing isn’t failing you at your young age.”

Seth’s attention was unwillingly diverted to his boss. “Sorry; didn’t hurt to try.”

He delivered a last swift tug to the cinch then patted the rear of the white stallion, his accent heavy as he informed Stone, “They are ready, sir.  Have a nice jaunt.”

He neared them to pass, paused and without thought told Stone as he grated one last, thoughtful glance over Cie, “I will give you my paycheck for the week if you’ll let me tag along – ”

“Seth, don’t press me,” Stone warned.

Cie blushed, not knowing how to react.  Seth’s unwarranted attention was flattering but the cutting edge in Stone’s voice frightened her.

Seth relented with a smile, continuing out of the stables into the bright sunshine but he kept turning back and smiling at her before he completely vanished from sight.

Her curious eyes were focused on his retreating form but she jerked her attention back to Stone as he commented in a flat tone, “Just ignore him; it is his way.”

She nodded and managed a tight smile, telling him, “He flattered me.”

Stone’s harsh glance intensified.  “You sound almost shocked over the revelation.”

She felt her face blush, suddenly feeling shy under his intense gaze.  “I am not accustomed to such attention.  I think there’s an overabundance of it here in England.”

“Come now, a woman as beautiful as you – I find that hard to believe,” he whipped out without thinking.

She was always doing this to him, ripping words from him that he did not wish to speak.

However, he mellowed towards her as she laughed and told him, “Stone, I am not sure whether to be honored or offended by that remark.  I have never been called a beautiful liar before either!”

She continued to laugh and though he fought against it, he found himself smiling with her against his will.

He assisted her into the saddle of the golden-colored mare that seemed a gentle breed of horse.  It took Cie a while to adjust to the height but by the time Stone stopped at the brook she felt confident in the saddle.

He had kept a careful eye on her along the way and she appreciated his concern, even though she was aware it was for his good friend, Hollace’s sake.

“Okay, time for a break,” he decided, leading them to the shade of a large weeping willow.

He helped Cie dismount, his hands easily swallowing her small waist.  They remained on her a little longer than necessary and when her inquisitive eyes met his, he immediately released her.

She smelled nice too, like the flowers in the meadow on a spring day.  If not for her ordeal regarding Hollace and Cookie he might have tried to snare her himself.  Then again, what would a woman as beautiful and perfect as Cie Chantel want with him?

Although she appeared to be embarrassed by Seth’s compliments, Stone supposed that she could have her pick of men.  She was stunning all right with that blond hair, blue-eyed Barbie doll look that always seemed to cut through a man’s heart.  But in this case, not through the senses.
