Chapter Five - Page 41

“What do you want?” he asked, deciding to get directly to the point.

Then it dawned on him. “I suppose that you’ve discovered that part of the bargain connected with the Shires is to provide a few riding lessons to you? You’ve called to tell me that Friday is off – ”

“Actually, no,” she told him, amazed that he had the guts to mention this aspect of his bargain with Hollace.

“No?”

“No,” she assured.

My, he was to the point.  Now what?  What could she tell him?  That she had overheard Judy Harper’s vicious plans?

Instead, she pardoned him with, “I have seen the Shires, Stone.  They are truly magnificent.  I really can’t blame you for going to such drastic measures to obtain them.”

She silently reflected that he was doing the same to obtain an heir.  Hard and callused as he wanted to appear, he greatly lacked self-confidence.  In defense he projected himself as a bitter recluse.

She waited through Hell’s Hall of Silence and when he failed to respond, she spoke again.  “I – I just wanted to tell you that I am looking forward to Friday morning.”  She paused, then tacked on, “Well, that’s about it, Stone.  I will see you on Friday, then?”

She was stunned as he told her, “Friday it is then.  And, Ms. Chantel – ”

“Please, Cie,” she requested again, happy over her small victory.  What victory she silently mocked?  She felt like an idiot calling him as she had.

“Cie,” he relented again, “I owe you an apology.  The reason that I asked you to accompany me on Friday was not totally due to the Shires.”

“Oh?”

Her heart sprang into her throat for some reason.  She felt giddy and was seized with anxiousness.

“I – I have great respect for Hollace and it is obvious that he cares a good deal for you.  I would have taken you at his request with, or without, an agreement on the Shires.”

She felt an immediate disappointment.  His apology was not what she had expected.  She had wanted him to say he had offered because he desired her company, her friendship - not out of an obligation to Hollace. One day, she would learn to quit entertaining expectations!

“Fine; apology accepted,” she murmured, trying to conceal her disappointment, her fingers tightening over the receiver as she desperately tried to collect herself. Her one salvation was that the conversation wasn’t taking place in person for she felt if that were the case, she would surely have betrayed herself.

“Good; then I will see you Friday morning at nine sharp.  It should prove interesting,” he eased out, his voice deep as it threaded clearly over the wires.

Cie hung up, actually finding herself excited about Friday.  She had reached a decision.  Stone needed a reason to believe.  Regardless of his harsh manner, and his cruel empty implications, she pledged to make a difference in his life.  One thing was certain; whatever had happened to him was so tragic that it refused to release him.

Even more tragic was the thought that Judy Harper would only compound his misery.
