Chapter One - Page 4

Both the child and Paige had perked Cie’s interest. She had hoped the commotion had been due to Hollace’s arrival for he had not met her at the airport with Paige and Cookie; she was very anxious to see him.

Cookie shrugged and returned to bouncing her ball. Paige addressed Cie, her breath a mere whisper as she confided, “I really wish the man would move far away from here but I suppose that is out of the question. I don’t like him – our bloody neighbor at that!”

Cie smoldered a surfacing smile, amused by her sister’s melodramatics which included the adoption of the English slang. And that Paige had chosen to whisper was quite unnecessary, as no one was within hearing distance without shouting – as Paige had to do such to Cookie moments ago. In addition, she had never known her sister to not like anyone. Why, she was as good as gold, and Cie couldn’t think of anyone more deserving of the aristocratic rewards of Melrose Castle than Paige. She devoted one-quarter of her time to her family, the rest to the poor and underprivileged. Hollace was equally benevolent, his love for nature and mankind clearly evident.

Cie eyed the man on the magnificent black horse in the distance.  He was a tall man, even from this span. He was riding beside the long fence row as if searching for a broken spot, though the iron fence looked without fault.

“Your neighbor?” Cie echoed, her eyes still surveying the tall stranger, and she noticed that his face was partially concealed by a mask of some sort as he peered downward, viewing the fence.

“Yes, our neighbor,” Paige mocked, sounding thoroughly disgusted. She sipped at her tea that was encircled with a steam of smoke then continued in a confident tone, “He is quite hideous – an ugly brute, though you can’t make him out clearly from this distance. Poor devil, his face is quite marred.” She paused, her voice adopting that dramatic tone, then continued in a whisper, “He wears a mask – like a harlequin – and his manner is just as ugly as the man himself.”

Cie’s interest was piqued further and she found herself leaning closer to catch her sister's every-word. Scrolling her blue eyes over Paige’s flushed face she plied, “Why? I-I mean, was he in an accident of sorts – ”

Paige blinked, and in a mysterious tone told her, "Actually, I haven’t a clue. And my dislike of him has nothing to do with his looks, of course. We are what we are, and that is that. It’s just, well…....he reminds me of a – a chameleon. His mood is…” she paused, lending a dramatic effect and finished, “unpredictable.”
