 Chapter Five - Page 39

While Cie pondered over her wonderful, eventful day a woman’s shrill voice captured her attention.  For some reason she imagined she had heard Stone’s name mentioned, but as she had become quite delirious in her deep thoughts she could not be certain.

The woman was seated at the table adjacent to her booth with a female companion who seemed totally captivated by her conversation, like some parrot on a pirate’s shoulder.  Pals, no doubt.

The owner of the shrill voice was a very beautiful woman dressed in a suit in a blood-red color that partially concealed a black silk blouse.  Obviously, nobility quality Cie silently mocked.  The auburn hair was professionally brushed behind a black wide-rimmed hat.

Her female companion did not possess the same good looks or expensive clothes.  However, she did possess interest.  Yes, definitely pals, Cie mocked again.

“I assure you that Stone Kiley’s proposal was genuine,” the beautiful woman was saying.

Cie blinked hard.  Yes, she thought she had heard Stone’s name mentioned and she was correct.  Obviously, this was Judy Harper.

So…this was Stone’s type.  Beautiful, but there was something sinister about the voice.  The woman was speaking in a bitter, confidential flair that held a prominent mocking tone.  And sadly, Cie felt it was directed towards Stone.  And why should she care?

Nonetheless, she continued to listen as she munched on the remaining crumbs of the scone, for some reason feeling that her eavesdropping was justified.

“I intend to accept his offer.  Why, I will be bloody wealthy by the end of summer,” she continued as she observed her friend’s face for a reaction to her rash announcement.

“How could you, Judy?  Why…his face…he is hideous!  A-a monster!  And you don’t love him, why, you couldn’t!  No woman could!”

Obviously, Judy’s words had thrown the woman into an obvious state of shock.  What was she so fired up about anyway?  If anyone was hideous, she was, her and her marauding, gold-digging companion.

“Darling, calm yourself,” Judy advised, patting her friend’s hand with a manicured hand that held long tapered red nails that matched her lips and suit to a tee.  A witch’s paw, Cie decided in silence.

She paused for dramatic effect and Cie felt it had become so quiet that they could hear her munching on her scone.

Finally, she continued, “Of course I do not love him.”  She paused again for that dramatic effect and eased out, “But I do love his fortune!” she laughed.  A witch’s laugh, Cie decided in silence, appalled by the conversation.  It was difficult to believe that people like this existed.

Judy’s comment was enough to pull a shocked gasp from her companion.  Cie felt so angry it was with great effort that she did not sling her cup of coffee on the two conspirators!  Why, they were arrogant little monsters!  No, worse – much worse, her mind unable to find words that would adequately describe such evil.

And how could Stone ever consider Judy Harper as a potential stand-in bride?  The woman was repulsive.  Beautiful, yes.  Repulsive, yes.  And Stone, well, he was an idiot!  Either that, or he was unaware of just how malicious his soon-to-be intended actually was.

God, she couldn’t have a heart.  She was like some slug with nerves and fibers controlling her; definitely not a heart in that body.

Judy continued in a mocking tone, “Stone Kiley is a fool!”

Judy’s laugh was cut short as her friend commented, “Yes, and ugly, too.”  Then she plied, “Judy, do you plan to meet his condition – to bear him an heir?  You are aware that is all that he desires of you?”

Cie was struck with realization.  Yes, an heir; someone to inherit his vast fortune.  Yesterday, Stone had mentioned as much himself.
