Chapter Five - Page 38 The following morning when Cie came down to breakfast Books informed her that Paige, Cookie, and Hollace had already left Melrose Castle for the day and would not be returning until late evening. Around noon, she became extremely bored and asked Books if she could borrow a car for the afternoon. Perhaps some sightseeing would place her in a better frame of mind. Books spent a good half-hour going over driving safety rules, continually warning about the importance of driving on the correct side of the road. Cie was amused by his spontaneous driving lesson, appreciative that he cared about her safety. She departed in the plush vehicle shortly afterwards, glad to escape the problems surrounding her at Melrose Castle. She spent some of the afternoon touring the village, investigating the smaller curiosity shops. Her purchases were minimal. It was fun to shop but she actually needed very little in life. Her apartment was tiny, so no need to cramp her current lifestyle. As she became familiar with the layout of the city and the surrounding land, she became absorbed with taking photos. She had brought along twenty-five rolls of film and by the end of the day her supply was fully exhausted. She had visited museums filled with historic treasures, castle ruins, haunting glens, a breathtaking cathedral dressed in awe-inspiring stained glass, pubs and there was still so much more to see. Who needed Roland?
She was making her way back into the city, passing through the shy intrinsic beauty of a tree-embowered village. A flock of sheep was placidly grazing in the meadow adjacent to the roadway so she paused alongside of the rather narrow lane to watch them for a spell. The scene was very pastoral, very relaxing. Especially when compared to the busy city life that she was so accustomed to leading. It was nice, this England holiday. Everyone needed to escape the ordinary every now and then. She only hoped that she would not miss the beauty of England too much when her life returned to normal. Normal? Her small apartment, her photography, her work what more was there? Sometimes, an acute feeling of loneliness seized her. Though she found great satisfaction in her work, a piece of the puzzle was missing. Love? Yes, that was the piece. Although she was well loved by her family, she had never experienced the one-on-one type relationship shared by lovers At one time, she thought she had found love. But she had been so wrong, so misguided by her good intentions. These uncomfortable thoughts seem to seize her frequently these days. Perhaps it was because she was getting older. Older and yes, much wiser. She would never allow herself to be taken to the cleaners again! She suddenly decided that she would think again on these things but not now. Not on her vacation. It was a time for escape, an escape from all of her worries, all of her problems. For now she would concentrate on enjoying the carefree sites of the city, and on building memories that she would cherish for a lifetime. Her only regret was that she had not visited England sooner. She continued on her round-a-bout. Several more charming cottages fronted the valley road, Cie finding the drive both entertaining and relaxing. The outline of the city towered into view, Cie deciding that she must get a panoramic shot before she left for the States. But for now, the lighting had faded and her film was expended so it must wait for another day.
Before heading homeward, she returned to one of the curiosity shops that she had patronized earlier that afternoon and collected the music box shaped like a piano that she had purchased for Cookie. She had left it to be engraved by the shop owner at his convenience throughout the day, for when she had made her purchase, his shop had been quite full of customers. She decided to stop at the Pub that Paige had taken her on the day of The shopping spree. This time she was determined to have a cup of their famous coffee. After she had settled into a secluded booth a young waitress took her order. Cie was allowed the opportunity to study the pub at great length. It was truly beautiful and she was fascinated by the ancient cash register on the mahogany bar. My, what a lovely and cozy little haunt. It was much different today than when Paige had accompanied her. No stress, just relaxing contentment. The waitress returned with her a cup of coffee and a lemon and poppy seed scone. Mulligan was responsible for her craving and after she sampled the scone she decided that his version was much tastier. Well, atmosphere does add she silently mocked. Nonetheless, the scone was still quite tasty and went well with the full-bodied cup of coffee. She could easily see why it had become a local favorite.
