 Chapter Four - Page 36

Hollace viewed her with a wooden face and told her bluntly, “Thank God you’ve arrived in plenty of time to head off the disaster!”

That’s what Hollace thought but Cie envisioned avenues of satisfaction that she was certain he would not approve of.  Stone, the worm that he was, had known last evening when she had questioned him by the fireplace that a stipulation for the Shires included riding lessons for her.  He had told her that the Shires would eventually be his.  How cruel of him to plot against her innocence!  To think that she had actually been looking forward to spending Friday with him, glad that she had dented his steel armor.  But he hadn’t asked her for the sake of friendship, rather to monopolize possession of the Shires!

Hollace continued to toss out allegations regarding the infamous Judy Harper.  “I will grant you that she’s beautiful – yes, I will give you that.  But it is his bloody fortune she is after.  You know, that girl would go well with Roland Caine…”

“Did I hear the delightful Roland Caine’s name mentioned?” Paige eased out with a false smile as she walked into the room.

Hollace snarled his lips and tossed his eyes heavenward.

“Goody,” Cie mocked thinking now that she would have been better off staying in the States.

“Darling, are you feeling well?” Paige inquired, gathering Cie’s full attention.  “Hum.  You don’t look so well,” Paige suddenly decided, one slim hand attached to her chin in thought.  “Your coloring is a bit off.”

“I am fine,” she tried to assure.

Hollace bravely forewarned, “Paige is right, darling.  You do look a bit ragged, a bit washed out.  Rest a spell.  And not a word on the matter!  I’m the doctor, here.”  He paused, then attached with a snide tone, “Stone would be very disappointed if you canceled out on him Friday.”

“What!” Paige demanded, her small face looking displeased under the dim lighting, for like the dining room, this room was massive and difficult to light.

Perhaps it was time to pull old Jupiter out of the closet, Cie pondered, feeling totally ridiculous by her rash thoughts.  But her wild thinking was not her fault; it was her sister’s and Hollace’s!

And even she was stunned by Hollace’s mention of Stone, for until now he had avoided broaching the subject with Paige in hearing distance.  For some reason, he had decided to summon up his bold and his brass.

Casually he responded with a slightly wicked looking smile, “Stone is taking Cie horseback riding on Friday.”  Then he wiggled his head back and forth a bit, reminding her of a cocky rooster who had just won a fight.

“Really?” Paige mocked in a dry tone.  With a mischievous look stamped on her face she plied, “What time on Friday is this gala event being held, pray tell?”

Her question was directed at Cie but Hollace answered for her.  “Nine o’clock in the morning, before the sun turns into a scorcher.  You have a problem with that, darling dearest?”

Paige narrowed her eyes and sent Hollace an accusing look.  “Do not mock me, Hollace.  You realize that I detest the man!”

“But darling, he saved our dear little Cookie’s life – ”

“And when I tried to thank him, he practically cut my head off!” she reminded him, her beautiful face etched with a painful looking scowl for the moment.  She continued, “Actually, I think he is jealous.  He can’t have kids, so he doesn’t want anyone else to, either.  What else would explain his robotic actions?"

“Please, darling, let us not rehash the past.” Hollace begged, holding out his hand and using it as he talked.  If he didn’t have his hands, Cie supposed that Hollace wouldn’t be able to talk, for his used them continually to get his point across.

“And there I was, standing there – like an idiot as he ranted on and on like a thirty-day wind up clock,” Paige continued to rant.

“Yes, I know, I know, darling,” Hollace said, holding up a hand to halt her words.

Cie felt responsible for the quarrel.  After all, she had baited her sister earlier regarding Stone and that had served to intensify Paige’s hostility.  Besides, it did not take much to set the woman off.  Short fuse, long temper.

When she would have interrupted the dispute, Paige suddenly told her, “You will have to cancel, darling.  I have made arrangements with the wonderful Roland Caine to take you on an outing Friday morning, and would you believe at nine o’clock on the dot?”

“A.M.?” Hollace asked for confirmation.

“Um hum,” Paige nonchalantly eased out, knowing full well that she was stroking up a fire.

Hollace slammed down his glass and angrily bit out, “How damned convenient!  Well, Stone asked first, so you will just tell Mr. Caine to make it another time.”
