Chapter Four - Page 35 Cie giggled, setting aside the silver spoon she had used for her vanilla ice cream, which was quite delicious as Books had prepared the mix himself, using fresh vanilla beans. "Please, Hollace, one matchmaker in the family is quite enough!” she blurted out, her voice holding an almost urgent appeal. He pointed an index finger at her, warning, “Roland Caine is a waste of your good time, Cie. Like you, he takes photographs. But unlike you, he is certainly no photographer! It is the bloody money that inspires him. You’ll see, once you glimpse his catastrophic work. Stone may not be the pretty boy but -” Cie giggled and Hollace paused, seeming a bit annoyed because she was taking the matter so lightly. He took a thoughtful sip of his drink then bluntly inquired, “I take it that Stone asked you to go horseback riding?” The cards finally came together. Full house! Cie suddenly felt foolish. It all seemed to fit now – the reason that Stone had issued his request regarding riding was part of the bargain for the Shires! Why didn’t she see it before now? In her wiry state she glanced at Hollace who looked like the cat who was fixing to get the cream. Well, she’d show them! She’d show them all – Hollace, Paige, and Stone! She had been manipulated more in the past few days than in her entire life! They were worse than a band of gambling gypsies, she hotly decided. Clearing her throat, she told him in a much cheerier voice than she felt, “Why, yes, he did ask me to accompany him on a horse riding expedition.” She eased out in a mysterious tone, “Stone mentioned something else that you might find interesting.” She paused for dramatic effect, holding a finger to her forehead as if in deep thought. Hollace was now on the edge of his chair. “Yes?” “Hum, I am trying to remember, Hollace. Something about an upcoming affair. Hum. Something involving a woman if I remember correctly.” She gazed at him and teased the moment by adding, “You and Paige seem to thrive on social events, don’t you? So when Stone was er, babbling today, I thought to myself, this may be an event that my dear sister and brother-in-law would love to attend!” “Well, get on with it, Cie!” he told her, his patience spended. “What event? What was so bloody important at the time, that you can’t seem to remember now?” “Hum. You are right, Hollace,” she agreed with a slight lift to her lips. “It must not have been that important, or else I would have clearly remembered.” Hollace delivered a satisfied nod and relaxed. With that, he relaxed back in his chair, and it looked like the beginning of a very lazy lounge. But he abruptly straightened when Cie nonchalantly eased out, “Oh! It just came to me. Stone is planning a wedding. Now that’s sure to be the event of the year. I am thinking he’ll marry at Ten Oaks.” “What! When? Who?” Hollace barreled out, sitting on the edge of his chair now, his lazy lounge forgotten. “Hum?” “Cie! Please, darling, this is vital news,” Hollace pleaded with her, Cie feeling a bit evil for teasing him. “Well, let me think,” she eased out, sounding as if she were straining to remember again. “I believe the event will be soon, as Stone’s agreed to exchange the horseback riding lessons for my photographic services at the wedding.” “What!” “And the bride’s name is a Judy Harper, I believe,” knowing darn well that she would probably never forget the name.
Hollace tossed out a mild oath, Cie quite surprised by the display for she had never known him to do such a sinful thing. He was out of the chair now, a hand roosting in each pocket of his brown slacks, his face ironed with anger. “Judy Harper! Of all the – the idiotic things! Why her? Why, she’s used trash! My God, the man’s more desperate than I thought.” Used trash? For some reason Cie found Hollace’s assessment of Judy Harper very satisfying. He twisted around to view her and demanded, “She hasn’t accepted, has she?” Cie winced her lips and shrugged. “Not that it is any of our business, but from what I gathered, no.” Hollace instantly relaxed and with a smile eased out, “Good! There’s still time, then.” “Time for what?”
