Chapter Four - Page 34

He looked thoughtful and Cie couldn’t resist asking, “What is interesting, Books?  That confident look stamped on your face concerns me.”

Books gave a thrust to the knife he was holding, lodging it into the wooden cutting block.  “And it should.  I know everyone in the village and you are the first female that has bestowed such generous comments regarding Mr. Kiley’s appearance – and an attractive one at that!  But, I must allow that you are an American, not so strict to pomp and glory as we English.”

It was her turn to project shock.  “Surely not.  I-I just don’t understand people sometimes. Even so, Stone's attitude is so…hostile.  Perhaps that’s what puts everyone off.”

“I am not saying that he is without interested suitors,” Books clarified.  “Trouble is, women desire his vast fortune and not the man himself.  Surprising what a woman will do for money – what anyone will do for money.  I shouldn’t think that anything more should shock me since Master Thatcher left his wife and seven children for that traveling entertainer.”

“Hum, she must have been something else,” Cie mumbled amid her circling thoughts.

“Dear, the entertainer was er…of the male variety.”

Cie lifted her brows.  “Oh.”

She studied Books for a few intense moments, marveling that their thoughts ran so parallel.  And what would he think if he knew about Judy Harper?  Hum, then again, perhaps he did.  He seemed to know a lot about everyone else, especially the notorious Mr. Thatcher.

Paige and Cookie arrived shortly before mealtime with Hollace following closely behind.  Cookie had complained about her fingers, angry with them because her music instructor had stated they were too nimble.

Hollace delivered a deep laugh and teased Cookie.  “Just look at you!  You are such an adorable little cookie when you pout, darling.  Those tiny pink lips grow at least three inches!”

Cookie had tensed and rebuffed, “You said that I look like Aunt Cie before!  I don’t want three-inch lips, Daddy!  I want to be beautiful, like Aunt Cie!”

“Oh, but darling, you are,” Paige assured, coming around to dust the tiny head with an affectionate kiss.  “Believe me, when Aunt Cie pouts, the two of you are the spitting image of one another. Now, off to your bath, my beautiful little munchkin!  Dinner will be soon.”

Cie tossed a weak smile to her sister’s well-intended compliment, at least she assumed it was a compliment.  Everyone seemed to be talking in circles these days.

They dined in the large gold room, the chandelier above the carved oak table almost not bright enough for the vast area.  However, the dimness added to the beauty of the magnificent room, lending a cordial, relaxed atmosphere making Cie want to whisper so as not to disturb the magic.

It was during dessert when Hollace broached the subject of Stone Kiley, the icon next door.

Paige had taken Cookie to her room to prepare for bed, telling Cie and her husband that she would join them shortly for coffee in the drawing room.

Cie was a bit amused at her brother-in-law’s tactics, aware that he took great care in mentioning Stone’s name, only doing such when Paige wasn’t within hearing distance.

“Well, how did it go at Ten Oaks today?" he began.  “You were able to give Stone the paperwork, darling?”

She nodded telling him, “Yes, but I failed to take my camera.  You were right, Hollace; Ten Oaks is impressive.”

Hollace reclined in the gold velvet chair, clasping his hands together, his lips forming an amused smile as he gauged her face.  “Stone is quite impressive as well, isn’t he?  I take it that he managed a few moments alone with you?” he plied, his accent thick.  Hollace allowed his questions to sink in then blurted out before she could respond, "And if he didn’t, the bloke’s a damned fool!”
