 Chapter Four - Page 33

When Cie returned to Melrose Castle she found Books in the kitchen awaiting her arrival.  He informed her that Paige and young Cookie had not yet returned home.

“I had a spot of luck in town today, Cie.  We shall be able to have our Mexican fiesta on Saturday,” he proudly informed.  “Perhaps I shall even be able to locate some entertainment – a band of sorts that can play peppy, wild music,” he rambled on, his eyes widening and lighting up at the rash thought.

Cie settled into the wicker chair at the small kitchen table and watched him as he continued to shred the salad for the evening meal.  His strokes were deft and precise.

“You shouldn’t have went to so much trouble for me, Books.  And please, don’t give that band another thought.”

He ceased his actions for a moment and with a warm smile he told her, “Trouble?  You are no trouble, my dear.  Your presence at Melrose Castle has been delightful!  I shall enjoy preparing a Mexican meal as I have never done such before.”  He went silent, then eased out, “Hum.  I have another great thought!”

“Oh?” she echoed apprehensively.  One never knew with this bunch.

“I play a fine classic guitar.  Hum?  Would you like that for your entertainment?” he asked, his  voice high and excited.

“Oh yes!  I would be delighted to hear you play,” she laughed.  “Perhaps you can wear a sombrero?” she couldn’t resist teasing.

She was stunned as he shared, “Actually, I own a sparkly suit of fine velvet that I will wear.  That is, if the weather is condescending.  Humidity and velvet do not mix well.”  He caught her face with his mysterious looking eyes and smiled.

Cie returned his smile and started to ask him about his friend Mulligan but hesitated, not wanting her thoughts to stray back to the incident at Ten Oaks, more specifically Stone Kiley.

Books rambled on as he prepared the meal and Cie considered how nice it was to have someone to talk with.  Most of her time back home had been spent behind the camera, alone with the silent scenery.  Her brief moment of happiness deflated upon this discovery, realizing that though she had been content with her work she was lonely…living like an aloof recluse…a bit like Stone Kiley…

“Cie!”

She jerked her head to Books and blushed, not wanting him to think she had become disinterested in his conversation.

“Are you all right, child?” he inquired, coming toward her with a concerned face.  “I feared you might fall ill – all the parties and shopping combined with delayed jetlag.  It is far too much excitement for one so fragile.”

Bringing a hand to his shoulder she reassured, “I am fine, honest.  It’s just, well I suppose you are right.  The long trip to England.  I-I suppose I am still tired from the journey.”

Books brought a hand to her cheek and in a sympathetic voice replied, “Or could it be from your journey to Ten Oaks?”

Cie’s blue eyes widened, shocked that Books had read her so completely.

Books returned to dicing the vegetables and continued, “Do not take Master Kiley and his words to heart, Cie.  His disfigurement has made him very embittered, especially as there is nothing the doctors can offer him.  He will carry the mask to his grave.”

Cie tensed her lips impatiently.  “Why should he be so embittered, Books?  He is quite attractive, even with the mask.”

Books lifted one brow and responded, “Very interesting.”
