Chapter Three - Page 27

“Well what, dear brother-in-law?”

Hollace straightened and tossed out, “Stone Kiley – ”

“W-what?” Cie stammered, her blond hair seeming to fray about her due to Hollace’s unexpected enlightenment.  “A contest?”

“Yes, a contest, dear,” Hollace laughed, suddenly making light of the situation and making Cie feel as if she were blowing a simple matter out of proportion.  He clamped his hands over her shoulders.  Searching her face he told her, “And darling, I don’t like to lose!  Now come, or I will be late for Birdy!"

He raced down the pathway leading back to the castle, Cie’s mind whirling with unsettled thoughts.  Once they arrived under the shade beside the breakfast table, Hollace left her, but not before nonchalantly telling her, “Stone isn’t on a time schedule so go when the mood suites you, darling.  Now, I must shower and change or I will be later than a nine-month baby in the womb.”

He dropped an affectionate kiss onto her forehead then left her alone by the pool to drown in her own thoughts - thoughts of uneasiness, of uncertainty, of insecurity.

To the silence she uttered, “It is a wonderful little back-stabbing family I have here.”

Nonetheless, the walk to Ten Oaks was delightful.  The meadows were green and full of life.  A flock of birds were soaring high overhead, mixing with the white puffy clouds of summer.  Some of the humidity seemed to have vaporized and it was turning out to be a glorious day!

Cie had the paperwork tucked inside the pocket of the loose blue sundress that she had changed into, but against Hollace’s advice she had left her camera back in her room.  This was going to be a quick trip.  No time for photographs.  Just a quick hand-off to Stone and she would be on her way.

Soon, Ten Oaks towered into view and nothing that Hollace could have told her would have properly prepared her.  Although she had glimpsed it before on the drive from the airport, one couldn’t perceive its full magnificence from afar. And Ten Oaks, like Melrose Castle, was situated about a half-mile from the main road, the greenery blocking a proper view.

From this short distance she was immediately enchanted by the towering structure that was surrounded by large grandfather oaks.  A thistle of thorns had been allowed to run rampant on the iron fence row separating the properties and Cie had to use great care maneuvering the gate latch.

When she finally reached the front door she adjusted her dress then rang the modern white button installed to one side.  A few moments later a kind looking man opened the door and offered a warm smile, his eyes dancing curiously over her.

“Good morning, sir. I am Cie Chantel,” she began, her voice a bit unsteady.  “Paige Melrose’s sister -”

“Yes. Why, come inside, my child,” he instructed, reaching out and firmly pulling her through the massive doorway.

Cie swiftly recovered and would have pondered the butler’s hasty actions more if she hadn’t been drowned by the lush surroundings.

A spiral staircase rested in the distance and the floor was hidden by an impressive-looking oriental rug. Stone had impeccable taste, for the area looked inviting.  She suddenly regretted not bringing her camera.

Her eyes flew unwillingly to the stranger as he informed, “My name is Mulligan.  I am well aquatinted with Doctor Melrose and his wife – charming couple they are!  Books is a very good friend as well.  Our wives went to school together and still meet often.  If you will follow me, please."
