 Chapter Three - Page 26

“Yes, look at them – like ten towering oaks, very large, very magnificent, very regal – the essence of Melrose Castle,” he laughed again.  “And as I saw it, ten Shires for Ten Oaks, eh?  Stone’s my boy; they’ll have a good home.  I want them close at hand should I wish to see them.  And I will want to do that quite often.  I have become quite attached to them over the years.”  He paused, then told her, “The errand involves the Shires, Cie…and Stone Kiley.”

She flinched, “Stone Kiley?”

He nodded.  “I have some information on the Shire’s background that he requested last evening.  Ten Oaks is about a half mile from here.  I am certain that you caught a glimpse of the castle on your way here when you first arrived,” he went on to comment more to himself than to her.  “There lies a pathway leading to his castle on the west end of the property.  I was wondering if you would mind delivering the paperwork to Stone?  His castle is very beautiful and I am certain you would enjoy seeing it.”

But would Stone enjoy seeing her she silently questioned herself.  She had witnessed his hostility twice and had no desire to encounter the man on his own territory.  She would rather visit the Great Oz himself than to face Stone’s steel grimace!

Licking dry lips she told Hollace, “Isn’t he expecting you?  And - and what about his work?  Will he even be there?”

Hollace laughed deeply then said, “Although Stone works, he certainly does not need to do such.  He has eons of money and makes his way through investments.  Why do you think he wants the Shires?”

Cie glanced back at the coral of fine horses.  Their offspring would indeed be worth a small fortune.

Hollace continued, “I no longer have the time to give them, especially since I have offered my services to the homeless shelters, and then there is the cancer research I have become involved in at the hospital. Not to mention my work at the University.”

Cie nodded, feeling acutely proud of her brother-in-law.  She knew of few physicians who would donate their time and knowledge to the poor.  Paige had told her how Hollace traveled to the less fortunate, sometimes by plane to other countries, never complaining or seeming to tire.  She suddenly felt unworthy of his love, voicing her own feelings of exhaustion to him earlier. Yes, the declaration made her feel worthless and undeserving.  If anyone had a right to complain it was Hollace.

Without a second thought she told him, “Yes, I would be glad to deliver the paperwork to Stone.  Besides, the walk would do me good.”

Hollace’s face beamed a smile of approval.  “And don’t forget your camera.  I am certain you will want to photograph Ten Oaks.  Mark my word, it is a show stopper!”

His face looked thoughtful, then he eased out carefully, “There is something that I must admit, darling.  A…um, truth.”

Cie narrowed her brows and echoed, “A truth?”

“Yes, I feel like a child caught with his hand in the cookie jar,” he laughed.  “We were pretty critical of darling Paige’s romantic escapades…but I must confess that I am not without guilt.”

“Oh, pray tell.”

Hollace lowered his head, actually reminding Cie of the child he had hinted of being, then confessed, “We are actually in contest over you, darling.  Paige has her sights set on Roland for you, and as for me….well, well….”
