Chapter Three - Page 25 “Nothing important,” he assured, rising from his chair and glancing at his wristwatch. “I must leave soon. I have an appointment scheduled for one-thirty with Birdy.” “Birdy?” He smiled and explained, “A Ms. Finch who was at the party last evening. Poor soul; her lumbago is acting up again. Birdy is a little nickname I tagged her with, but she seems to enjoy it; same as I did with old Books. Now there’s a good-natured bloke.” She rose with him, gently tugging at his arm. “Tell me about the errand, Hollace. I am not that tired.” He shrugged then relented, reading the desperation outlined on her beautiful face. “All right, then come with me,” he urged. He directed her north toward the huge stable in the distance. “Books was going to tend to the matter for me but Paige has sent him on a wild goose chase for the makings of a Mexican meal.” It was her favorite food and Cie felt inclined to protest. “She shouldn’t have! I would be pleased with anything Books desires to prepare,” she assured. She imagined poor Books running all through England desperately trying to locate the makings of a Mexican meal. Hollace sent her a mischievous glance and eased out, “You haven’t tasted his cockles and whelks, darling.” He stuck out his tongue in disgust and she laughed at him as he took her hand and challenged, “I feel like running! Race you to the stables!” She laughed hard as he pulled her along, deciding the man was totally mad. Due to the heat and humidity, by the time they reached their destination Hollace was drenched in sweat, his suit in total ruins. He discarded the lightweight jacket and loosened his tie telling her, “It is fun to be reckless! And it is all Paige’s fault. Why, I never ran until I met her. Eventually, the wench finally caught me!” Cie giggled, her eyes adjusting to the dimness of the stable, the scent of hay filling her nostrils.
Hollace continued, “I wanted to show you the Shires firsthand, Cie. They are truly magnificent animals.” He led her to the rear of the monstrous building then to a holding pen. Her eyes widened at her discovery and she was instantly enthralled by the sight of the Shires. They were huge with straight manes and shiny black hooves. She had to tilt back her head to view them and the moment left her speechless. She could certainly understand why Stone and Roland were so adamant to possess them. “Ten in all – all over seventeen hands high and a little over two thousand pounds each. They are big eaters,” he whispered to her in a mocking tone. Cie laughed at him, suddenly longing to touch the silky white manes, which seemed to shimmer even within the dimness of the stables. He laughed and hugged her to him. “Darling, you look quite bewitched by them!” “Yes, I am at that,” she laughed back. “I can understand why both Roland and Stone desire them.”
