 Chapter Two - Page 12

Paige widened her eyes in mild shock, obviously not believing her.  She sat in silence a good five seconds as Strawberry Fields Forever bayed in the distance.

Then, “No!  He – he wouldn’t!”  She paused then tacked on in a confident tone, “Oh, pooh! What am I worried about?  Even if Hollace invited him, he would never accept the invitation.  And as I have mentioned, he is aware that I am not exactly fond of him.”  She paused again, then continued, “Besides, he’s not a social animal.”  She delivered a sly smile and erased a spoonful of marmalade and biscuit.

Cie informed in a clipped voice, displeased by her sister’s swift recovery, “Well, I hate to break your balloon, but Hollace did indeed ask him.  Furthermore, Stone fully intends to come to the party.  In fact, he’s going to discuss the Shires with Hollace-"

Paige choked, recovered and tossed out in an excited tone, “Surely he doesn’t intend to sell out to – to that horrid scoundrel!” She paused, her eyes mildly crossing in thought, then she continued, “I thought he had cinched a deal with Roland Caine!”

With that she tossed down her spoon and napkin, rose and ordered Cie, “Come, dear.  We haven’t time to waste.  I must reach Melrose Castle so I can talk some sense into my husband’s thick head! God, why didn’t I settle for more brains and less brawn?”

Cie thrust her tongue in her cheek, stifling a laugh.  Hollace was more handsome in spirit than in looks. He was too tall, too wiry, and too sinewy to ever be considered brawn.  Her mirth died as a flash of Stone Kiley paraded through her thoughts.  On the other hand, Stone was definitely a man with brawn – lots of it, in fact.  And, exceptionally good looks – even with his concealing mask.

Paige was at the wheel of the expensive executive gray foreign car.  “You just wait! When we get home, I will set Hollace straight,” Paige went on to reassure, taking the turns much faster than Cie would have preferred, especially since she was still getting accustomed to riding on the wrong side of the road – at least, according to American standards.

But when they arrived at the castle Hollace was not there.  Lucky Hollace.

Books had everything well in hand, handling all the party preparations like the true professional that he was.  He reminded Paige that the caterers would soon be arriving and there was little time to dress.

Three hours later the party was in full swing.  And what a party it was!  Paige pawned Cie from one devastatingly handsome male to another, to a point where they all looked faceless. She had never danced so much in her entire life as she had tonight. Her legs had virtually no feeling left in them.

At least Paige had included a nice mix of single women in the group - perhaps to entertain the castaways that Cie might spawn. By now, she had learned that her crafty sister never did anything without a motive in mind.

The massive room was ablaze with lights.  Paige had rented a rotating ball as big as Jupiter that was almost blinding.  There was enough food to feed China and then some – cheeses, wines, breads, meats, exotic fruits. She half-expected to see the fatted calf spinning on a rotisserie in one corner of the room.

At one point Cie had begun counting the various hors d'oeuvres and came up with two hundred and five before a brown-headed Englishman named Mandy whirled her onto the dance floor.

A regular orchestra had been hired for the occasion, the conductor resembling Mozart.  He was a passionate man, his baton vibrating like an acrobat on an unstable tightrope, a bit like Cie’s nerves at the moment.
