Chapter Two - Page 11

The entrance of the hot teas and biscuits prohibited Cie from a timely response but the moment the young waitress left them she attacked her headstrong sister.

“I thought that tonight I would be meeting family friends.  How dare you play Miss Matchmaker – ”

“Oh, pooh!” Paige spat out, tossing down the frilly white napkin, the pout extenuating her painted red lips.  “When are you going to quit making that camera your life, Cie? Since that disastrous fling with – with…  Oh hell – what was his name?”

“Mitch – ”

“Yes, Mitch.  And since Mitch,” Paige continued, reclaiming her napkin, “you have decided to turn into some - some mole person.”

“Let’s not discuss Mitch,” Cie hissed, trying to concentrate on the cup of ungodly hot tea and wishing she had ordered the famous coffee instead.  She needed the caffeine as ‘sister dear’ was giving her the mother of all migraines.

Paige was thoughtful a moment then picked up her spoon and relented, “Very well; I will not discuss Mitch, the insolent worm that he is.  Imagine, finding him in the act – with your best friend at that.  You never have a camera when you need one – ”

“Paige!”  Cie straightened and after exchanging a heated glance with her, she informed in a confidential tone, “And for your information, I did happen to have a camera.”

Paige drifted a laugh throughout the Pub drawing the attention of a handful of patrons in the process.  “Goody!”

Cie winced her lips impatiently and extinguished her sister’s smile as she added, “Well, it was not loaded.”  A smile suddenly touched her lips in remembrance as she shared in a soft confidential tone, “But Mitch thought it was.”

“My – this is glorious!  Hollace will die with delight – ”

“No, this is not for sharing, Paige,” Cie immediately reprimanded.

“Fine!” she echoed, far from satisfied that the matter was over.

For some reason Cie yearned to perturb her for making her remember the scoundrel Mitch and for turning the oncoming night into a matchmaking party.

She scooped up a large spoon of marmalade from the fluted bowl the girl had left behind and eased out, “This list of eligible bachelors that you have so arduously compiled for this evening – it doesn’t happen to include Stone Kiley does it?”

“What!”

Cie rose a notch at Paige’s obvious deflation.  “Well, you do know that Hollace invited him to the party tonight?”
