He recovered just in time to see Jenna racing away from the barn on her horse into the oncoming dusk.

Perhaps it was best, he went on to decide as he watched her disappear over the horizon.  She would have no problems in reaching home by sunset and the night ahead would give her time to cool off her jets.

However, he'd like to make certain that she made it home.  He'd give his best friend Wade a call so he could check it out for him.  No doubt that Jenna would hang up on him if called her - and right now, he didn't want to lose anymore face.  Best to look strong, he went on to decide while continuing to kick himself in the butt for his idiotic blunder.  He'd be lucky if she would even see him - much less ever forgive him.

That cute little filly named Linda Lou that he'd been foaming at the mouth to ask out didn't seem so appealing anymore.  She wasn't nearly the woman that Jenna was - in looks or personality.  But she was a sure-fire home run.

He headed towards the ranch house to call Wade, then he supposed he'd settle in for an episode of Gunsmoke.  Nothing like a good western to wash away the blues.

Tomorrow morning, he would drop in on Jenna - surprise her and try to win her back.  Good grief  he hated crawling on his hands and knees.  Once he was in that position, Jenna would all but brand him.  Then again, he supposed he deserved it he decided, depositing the diamond ring inside one pocket of the stone-washed jeans.

Jenna cried all the ride home, the hot winds of August drying her tears along the way.

Once inside her ranch house, she took a lingering soak in the four-footed tub.

She knew Buck like a book and if she were a betting woman, Linda Lou was next on his romantic hit-list.

Jenna tossed the bar of soap into the water as she continued pondering about Linda Lou.

The woman was a home-grown cowgirl who had a passion for high-rise short-shorts and halter tops.  Jenna supposed that Buck was one of the few eligible bachelors in the county that Linda Lou hadn't been with.

Of course, that was soon to be remedied, she silently mocked.

She had just slipped into the white terry-towel robe when the phone rang.

"Jenna, Wade here," the deep voice clipped out, edged with a thick western twang.

Buck's best friend, she silently mocked.

"Hi Wade.  Buck's not here."

"Actually, I called to talk to you," he informed, Jenna thinking that news sure traveled fast in Choctaw County.

In fact, Buck had probably confided in Wade weeks ago regarding his plan to dump her. The girlfriend was always the last to know, she went on to mock.

"Yes, Wade?"

"Buck just rang me.  Said you and him were parting ways.  I wanted to beat the long line," he told her, Jenna imaging the firm lips, the ebony hair and oversized cowboy hat. Yep, Wade put the K in kicker.

And he wasn't her type and even if he had of been, she was still hooked on Buck.

Well.  At least it appeared that Buck had only just let the cat out of the bag.  If nothing else, she could find comfort in that.

"You still there?" Wade asked, Jenna taking far too long to respond to his compliment.

"Yes, I'm here, Wade. Look, I don't mean to sound rude, but I'm still shaken about the break-up. In fact, I was just fixing to retire for the evening," she informed, trying to remain hospitable but not quite making the grade.

"Buck's riding over to your place in the morning for a lil powwow," Wade informed, attempting a different angle.

"What?"

"Right.  Appears that he intends to make sure that you two remain friends.  I figure that he doesn't know what he has or he wouldn't have set his sights on Linda Lou," he drawled, settling back in his chair and propping up his lizard-skinned boots on the desk, stuffing the large cigar in between his teeth.
