“Jill wants to talk with you, young man,” she told him and when he didn’t respond, she pointed a crooked index finger at the phone and made a face at him.
He swallowed hard, then decided it best to talk with ‘backup’.
“Hello,” he eased out, not knowing exactly how to approach things. The situation was growing more confusing and more complicated by the moment. And what if ‘backup’ were as wild-minded as Aunty?
“Jake here,” he added, hoping that Jill was equipped with more social graces than Aunty.
He heard a big sigh of relief on the other end of the line, then a lady’s voice. She told him, “Thank you so much for talking with me. I’m Aunty’s niece,” she explained.
She hastily continued, “Jake, I’m in my car and on the way to Aunty’s house. If you could please stay with her until I arrive - shouldn’t be more than five minutes - then I’m sure we can iron-out this situation.”
“Sure, I can do that, Jill,” he told her.
He relaxed further still when she informed, “Jake, I think this goes without saying, but Aunty is…not quite her old self these days.”
“I understand, Jill. See you soon then.”
