Between the Sheets, a short love story by Sky Taylor - Page 1 Lori was returning home - to the land she loved, the home of the bear. One by one the miles had slowly clicked away, a sense of anxiousness seizing her as she read the road marker, 'Kodiak, 1 Mile'. The blue Mustang hugged the mountain curves as she rounded each one with caution. It had been misting rain for the last fifteen minutes, creating a slippery climb. And the trail was already treacherous with only a small rail bordering the roadway which insufficiently barricaded a deadly fall. Lori tried to keep her focus on the strip of road before her, fighting back the temptation to sink her eyes into the breathtaking scenery to her right which flowed endlessly from the mountaintop to the valley below. She felt a bit like the ice cream anchored inside a banana split with no other option except to go up, up, up the mountain.
As flashes of orange and red echoed from the trees and tinted the mountain surfaces, she decided that autumn was her favorite season. The area resembled an eternal red-orange sunset and Lori was growing more impatient, feeling as if she couldn't reach home quite quick enough. Her sense of impatience was coupled with the happiness created by her parents when they had given her the old home place as a college graduation gift. Lori had never expected anything so elaborate - so wonderful - so perfect. Now she could set up her vet practice while living on a small budget until her funds grew. Many structures fanned around the old log cabin which were ideal for holding animals. And she planned to transform one of the tiny bedrooms into an office. Although there wasn't much space, it would hold a desk and her degree. Kodiak was a small, but thriving town. When she had inquired into setting up practice in the area, the town council had been delighted. Currently, the nearest vet was fifty miles away.
