Bell Moon, a Short Love Story - Page 1
Set in the Old West.....
Judd didn't suppose that he detested anything more than entering a saloon than having to go inside and collect one of his cowboys. And on this chilly October evening he found himself doing exactly that....
Hired hand Dale Moon had a fascination with whiskey. Judd had hired him on at the McBride horse ranch about six months ago. The cowboy was a hard worker, but in hindsight Judd would have passed him up if he'd been aware of the drinking problem. And he'd given him chance after chance to get his life in order, but it seemed that Dale was incapable of accomplishing such.
It wouldn't be comfortable, letting him go - but he knew that's what he had to do. He'd never had to fire anyone that worked for him. Judd paid the highest wages in the area, and unlike most of the farms and ranches, he was generous about giving his cowboys free time.
Drawing in a deep breath, Judd straightened to his full six-foot-four height and prepared to enter the double-swinging doors of the saloon. He paused, only because he detected an odd high-pitch emitting from the saloon.
As he entered he saw a tiny little lady pointing a pink-painted index finger at the very drunken Dale Moon.
"You should be ashamed of yourself!" she scolded, wagging the finger as she spoke. "Just look at you - unfit for horse fodder. And you smell to high heaven, Dale. What would our father say about you now? Why, he'd be heartbroken - is probably turning over in his grave right now over your tomfoolery!"
