"I'm applying a loose bandage to the bite," he explained as he worked, attempting to keep her alert.  

He didn't want her going female on him - passing out, crying and fainting.  A snakebite he could handle.

He continued, "We need to get your leg elevated, then get you transported to a hospital asap.  My ranch is a short ride.  Great spot for a medi-chopper to land."

Before Savannah could fully digest his words, he had loaded her onto the black stallion, then quickly draped a limp Pardner in front of her over the strong neck of the horse.

Within minutes, he quickly closed the gap between life and death, and was anchored by Savannah's bedside at the hospital when she awoke almost a day later.

As her blue eyes popped open and slowly took in the unfamiliar surroundings, they landed on the stranger who fastened a smile onto his rugged lips as their eyes connected.

"My dog-"

"Pardner is doing well," he informed, observing her through the dark eyes, leaning forward to summon a nurse as he pressed on a bright red button.  "The bum's resting at my ranch and appears to be quite taken with my cow dog, Lady. My vet assured a complete recovery."

A wave of relief washed over her and she nodded as he asked, "Thirsty?"

"Yes, please."

She wrestled with the sheets, attempting to sit up, finally just managing as he handed her the glass of water.

"I owe you my life and don't even know your name," she told him, then concentrated on his handsome face as she took a sip of the cool water.  She must look as ugly as he did gorgeous, she tacked on to her chaotic thoughts.

"Jade Austin," he drawled.  "I understand you're Savannah Jordan.  I know your grandfather quite well."
