Moon, a love story by Sky Taylor - Page
2
A scream
wretched from deep inside her throat emerged
as she raced to pull Pardner out of harm's
way. He was all but lifeless, she
realized, her heart thumping wildly inside
her chest.
He had tried
to warn her, but humans weren't among the
smartest of God's creatures she decided
amid her rod of panic.
Without warning,
the rattlesnake suddenly appeared, coiling
into a rope and preparing to strike. The
patchwork pattern, the triangular-shaped
head, the eyes which were nothing more than
tiny slits - Savannah had never
been this close to a snake before. She
didn't even like snakes.
Freezing
to the spot, she held her breath then screamed
as the rattler lunged forward, biting her
just above the knee-high leather boots.
Her scream
must have aroused Pardner for he stirred
and rose with difficulty, weaving as he
honed in on the rattlesnake who appeared
determined to make another attack for he
had began recoiling.
Through the
distance, she tried to coax him away, Pardner
refusing, choosing to challenge the persistent
rattlesnake.
Within seconds
of the bite, her leg had began to swell
and by the time that she had scampered a
few feet away from the tree, she wasn't
able to yank it off. As the minutes
passed, the boot tighten against her swollen
skin, quickly becoming more painful than the bite itself.
She felt
like a hot poker had been placed onto her
leg, as she continued doing her best to put distance between
her and the rattlesnake, calling out,
"Pardner, come here boy! Please,
come here!"
Her heart
was racing wildly, her lips were beginning to
tingle and she felt sick to her tummy -
the drugging gift of the snake. And
when she went to move, she collapsed into
a tiny heap onto the ground, the dog the
only thing separating her from the kiss
of the snake.
