Rance squinted the dark eyes at Jezzy, his ninety-two year old neighbor. There was not a doubt in his mind that she hadn’t swiped his milk cow.
And this wasn’t her first Ferret Rodeo. In fact, her hobby ranch contained several of his ‘former’ stock including a Rhode Island red rooster, a minimum of two dozen hens, three lambs, five goats, and his female bulldog Bea - which Jezzy had renamed Concubine.
Unfortunately, as he had questioned her, Jezzy was as calm as a cucumber - the only tell-tale of her frustration being the frayed snow-white hair which was standing on end.
The shaky voice informed him, “You’ll have to confer with Daffney on the cow.”
“You named the cow Daffney?” Rance asked for clarification because Jezzy could be a five-thousand piece puzzle at times.
“No, but I think it’s a nice name for a pony,” Jezzy decided, the gray eyes twinkling as she consider the prospects - Rance instantly realizing that one of his horses was next on her ‘must have’ list.
Thinking it best to stick to the conversation of cows he averted her pony comment with, “Jezzy, about my missing cow-”
“Are you deaf, dear?” Jezzy tossed back, reclaiming her rocking chair along with her knitting basket upon which she focused her full concentration. “I’ve told you that you’ll have to confer with Daffney.”
Rance capped the straw hat back onto his dark cap of hair and delivered a defeated sigh.
What now?
It just didn’t feel right - collecting the cow and taking her back to the ranch. And he wasn’t about to get the law involved.
