"I'd like to get married again," Hugh eased out, Monica setting aside her cup of coffee as his announcement had stunned her.

Since the death of her husband William two summers ago, Monica had found a dear friend in Hugh.  He had known what it was like, losing a spouse, a soul mate, a true love for he had experienced the same with the passing of his beloved Pamela only a handful of months before Monica had lost William.

Their great losses had forged a strong bond between them, and because Hugh's daughter and Monica's son were married, she supposed that had only strengthened the bond.

Over the years she had gotten to know both Hugh and Pamela quite well and loved them dearly. She was also aware that Hugh and Pamela had felt the same about her and William. They had gotten on so well, meeting to play board games, even once taking a Mexican cruise together.

Pamela's passing had hurt both her and William quite deeply and they had been there to offer support for Hugh during those difficult months.  And when William had passed on quite suddenly in his sleep, Hugh had been there to offer a comforting shoulder.

To suddenly learn that he was planning to remarry was disturbing - for surely a new wife would not tolerate the frequent visits with her, Monica pondered in silence.  And she wasn't ready to share Hugh, not yet at least.  Perhaps not ever.

She was snapped from her thoughts as Hugh took one of her slender hands and caressed it with his, as he asked, "You will marry me, Monica?"

Blinking her eyes in understanding, they suddenly filled with tears as she grasped the meaning of Hugh's words. Although they had never shared a passionate kiss, they were dear friends and companions and those passionate moments would come.  She knew of the strong love that existed between them. But of course, they were both too old to contemplate marriage.

"Hugh, at our age?" Monica challenged, her eyes bright, part from happiness, part from the unshed tears.

"Darling, surely you realize at this stage in life that people are like wine and roses - they simply improve with age.  Now don't make an old man beg," he asked, placing a kiss onto the top of Monica's hand.

And she didn't.

THE END
