How could he be so cruel? So conniving? She really couldn't blame Cindy, for she'd been sprouted on the wild side with so many boyfriends that Gretchen had lost count. And she had no way of knowing that she was in love with Bobby John.

Why she'd only discovered the fact when he'd handed her the diamond ring this evening, telling her that soon they could be lovers now that he'd given her the ring.

"Are you going to go hand that devil back his tainted ring, or am I going to have to do it for ya?" Buck asked, squinting through the dark shadows, wishing he would have scooped up his store-bought 3.0 vision glasses before flying to the road.

"Oh grandfather! I've been a total idiot - a silly fool," Gretchen told him, although the scene before her wasn't as heart-wrenching as it should have been. Instead, she felt ill to her stomach. Perhaps she wasn't in love with this-this devil after all, she decided, turning to touch her grandfather on the forearm.

"Grandfather, let's go home. I'll give Bobby John back his ring tomorrow," she told him. "No need to embarrass my best friend."

He nodded and couldn't help adding, "After all, what are best friends for?"

"I'm not sure, but I do know what grandfathers are for," she assured, leaning over and pressing a kiss into his weathered cheek, Buck feeling as if she'd melted his arctic sunset.

And as he set the jeep into motion, he felt even more alive as Gretchen contemplated aloud, "Perhaps I've been wrong about Frank, too. He's a rather handsome young man, don't you think, grandfather?"
