She knew that look - and it would take some heavy buttering-up to erase and to replace it with a grin.

She was shocked as he jerked her hand into his and led her to the old jeep resting under the willow tree, the limbs so low that her grandfather had to use his free hand to hold them back as he stuffed her inside the jeep.

"Gonna show you something,child," he informed, his tone resolute as he fired the engine to life. The old jeep was a bit like him, past her prime but still a-going.

As they moved through the shadows on the evening, Gretchen assured, "Grandfather, there is nothing that you can show me that will change my mind about Bobby John. I love him."

"You love Frank, child - only you're too blind to see it. That rascal has placed an invisible blindfold over your eyes."

Gretchen gasped as her grandfather made a sudden, sharp turn and within minutes they were outside of her best friend's house - only he had taken care to park a bit down the lane, the jeep nestled in the shadows.

"What are we doing at Cindy's house?" she wanted to know.

"Rather than taking note that we are planted at Cindy's, you'd do better by taking note that Bobby John's Ford is parked in her drive," Buck told her, knowing that the truth was going to hurt. However, better roped than branded.

There was no more time for pittly conversation as Bobby John and Cindy emerged on the porch, silhouetted by the dim light as Buck considered her idiot of a father who'd used a 15-watt bulb rather than a 60. Penny pincher.

Gretchen's heart felt like it was going to break as her true love bent and delivered a passionate kiss to her best friend. The scene was almost unbelievable - even if she had seen it with her own two eyes.
