Buck was in the sunset of his life....the arctic sunset for he had outlived his usefulness many moons ago. Or, he so thought. But he'd be damned if he was going to allow his granddaughter to screw up her life, just to please her.

"Rebellious, pig-headed woman!" he spewed out, so angry with Gretchen that he was shaking. Didn't have a damned thing to do with his age, either.

Women! He never had known one that held a lick of sense - although he had believed his Gretchen was smart. But that was before - mere moments ago when she had announced that she had her sights set on Bobby John - a young man who was more bothersome than a tsetse fly.

Buck should have known this was coming for Bobby John had been swarming around her for the past few weeks. And if the girl didn't move away from him quickly, he'd end up giving her the bite of death.

And what the hell was wrong with Frank? Where was the boy? Probably stuck out in a cornfield with his head rammed into a hole - for it was obvious he was blinded to the situation surrounding him. Gretchen was his girl. Why, they were made for one another - only Gretchen was too fickle to see the truth before her, a bit like Scarlet O'Hara and Rhet Butler. And by the time she came to her senses, it would be too late to rectify the situation.

"Grandfather, get over it," Gretchen told him, and if she was rebellious and pig-headed, she knew exactly where she got it from. "Just look at the ring Bobby John gave me," she told him, trying to make him see sane reasoning - that she was in love.

And it was a beautiful ring - the biggest diamond that she'd ever seen before.

"Get that fragosie away from me, child before you blind me. Furthermore, I have to speak my mind and it's dead-set against Bobby John," he told her, his face looking fussy.
