"Yes she did," Abby eased out, aware that her comments had troubled the handsome Mr. Smith. "Mr. Smith, I must be honest," she continued while she still had the nerve. "Bea's grades appear to have taken a down-swing over the last couple of months....right after the er...incident involving her mother.  Nonetheless, I would like to ask if there is any chance that she might return to her father? I believe she needs normalcy-"

"Ms. Walton, I am her father," Gil informed, one index finger going up to lift his collar from his neck as he suddenly felt hot due to teacher's ridiculous comments.  Hell, hadn't she even taken time to go over Bea's records before his arrival?

Abby gasped, the announcement coming as a shock. "Mr. Smith, I assure you that Bea told me that her uncle was meeting me today - that her father was recovering from the divorce. Why would she tell me otherwise?"

Quite quickly, Gil managed to put two and two together, his daughter's comments regarding 'the extra nice Ms. Walton' flooding through his thoughts. The bad grades - the meeting with teacher, everything suddenly made perfect sense.  Bea was matchmaking.

As the situation dawned on him, he bent his head and massaged it with one hand, lightly laughing as he told the confused Abby, "I believe that my daughter is dabbling in a bit of matchmaking, Ms. Walton."

When he gazed up, her mouth looked like a perfect O - obviously taken aback over his comments.  He told her, "She's been tossing around some flattering comments about you lately, about how nice you are - how nice you smell and so forth."  She sure did smell nice, Gil tacked on silently.

"About her mother," he continued, wanting to get the situation rectified.  "We divorced a couple of years ago.  She's married to a nice guy, a sergeant in fact."

"I-I see," Abby managed, wanting to wring off Bea's skinny neck. "Then all these mistakes as of lately - were purposely done?"

"Yeah, I imagine so," Gil drawled. Then, "Look, why don't you let me buy you some dinner, then we'll collect Bea.  She's at a friend's house.  We'll have a long talk with her, put things back in order.  Sound like a plan?"

Abby offered a slight smile, finding the thought of sharing dinner with the handsome Gil quite appealing. And suddenly, she wasn't perturbed at little Bea one little bit....
