She Squawks, The Love Song©

Free Online Short Love Story

Written by American Author Sky Taylor

It was all that Hank could do to remain rooted to the spot. The child had a voice like a rabid parrot. She'd better thank her lucky stars that he didn't have a roll of duct tape on him.

And if her aunt believed that she stood a chance in Hades of winning the singing contest, she was an idiot.  However, a very beautiful idiot, he tacked on as he chanced a ravishing glance towards the subject of his thoughts, attempting to block out the wild child's squawks.

Jessica Noland.  What he wouldn't give to have a date with that. Blond hair, blue eyes, 18-inch waist - or so he imagined. He'd thought about nothing else since she'd leaned over in the short outfit she was wearing and had placed a good-luck kiss onto little Rita's cheek.  Too bad it hadn't worked.

The fact that Jessica had settled in beside him wasn't any help in dousing his growing flames of passion.  Her perfume was so sweet, so powerful that he felt the fumes had settled into his western shirt and jeans.

The lights suddenly brightened as the squawking child vanished from the stage, everyone clapping.  Intermission. Great.  Now he'd get in some small talk with the beautiful Jessica.  Single too.  Just like him.

As Jessica clapped loudly for her niece, she twisted towards the hunky Hank. She supposed that she shouldn't be cozying up to the competition, for his niece was competing against Rita, but she couldn't help herself.  If looks could kill - woohoo!

As the crowd disbursed for intermission, she was pleased that Hank remained in his seat.  She asked him, "So what did you think?"

"About Cheetah?" he asked, then his eyes quickly blinked as he realized his great mistake.  Darn!  He couldn't even think properly with Jessica so near.

"Cheetah?" she asked, knitting her brows together in confusion.

"Yes, the little lady before your niece was pretty bad," he rectified, hoping that she didn't catch his slip.  Rita, Cheetah - all the same to him.  Same squawk.

"Oh!  Yes, I agree.  I was asking how you felt about my niece."

"Voice of an angel," Hank lied, not a guilty bone in his body. "And I might add, her aunt looks like an angel."

Jessica smiled coyly, his compliment one of the most flattering she'd ever received.

A few hours later over a romantic dinner, Jessica and Hank passionately discussed the unfairness of Cheetah taking the win.

THE END
