Love is Like That
This beautiful, exquisite goddess was
big, burly Hank's sister? Luke had an urge
to give himself a swift kick in the be-hind.
For years, Hank had wrestled with him over
his sister - attempting to arrange a blind
date on more than one occasion.
"Hank tells me that you're not the
marrying type," Kitty teased, nodding
in the distance where Kirk stood swinging
the confiscated garter around one index
finger.
"He tells me the same thing about
you," Luke felt inclined to share.
"You're not at all what I expected."
"Neither are you," Kitty countered
with a dazzling smile. "Being a friend
of Hank's, I had expected rough, rowdy and
full of fleas."
"Are you okay? That was quite a
collision-"
"Quite okay," she assured with
another smile. "Perhaps some punch-"
"Great idea," Luke smiled back,
extending a bent elbow.
Kitty threaded her hand through the gap,
then walked with him to the large table
under the grandfather oak.
"Nice day for a wedding," Luke
eased out, wanting desperately to strike
up a conversation with her. Something about
her.....something that seemed to hypnotize
him. She sure had a nice smile. He liked
that in a lady.
"Yes, and lucky for Karen that the
rain held off." Kitty drew in a deep
breath of fresh air, then timidly eased
out, "I realize that you overheard
the incident with my new sister in law.
A bit unfortunate."
"Yeah. Just Karen being Karen,"
Luke replied, not knowing what else to say.
"Exactly," Kitty echoed, accepting
the cup of punch from Luke. "She'll
be fine now that she's blown off steam.
I just hope that she realizes what a great
guy she has there. And I hope that this
large wedding wasn't just a fantasy that
she fulfilled through Hank."
Luke narrowed his eyes through the distance,
where Kitty was looking. Karen and Hank
were posing for the wedding photographer,
both smiling - Karen's a bit flat looking.
"Come now, doesn't every lady long
for a perfect wedding day? Cake, champagne,
diamond rings, live band. Looks like Karen
covered all the corners."
"Not me," Kitty assured, her
green eyes sifting to Luke's thoughtful
looking face. "All the wedding grandeur
in the universe can't buy love."
"I agree, Kitty," Luke drawled.
"You sound a bit like I feel. When
it comes to marriage, I suppose I have cold
feet."
"Oh me too!" Kitty assured,
reaching out a hand and touching Luke's
forearm. "I'm far too independent for
marriage. I enjoy my life and I refuse to
have someone rearrange it to their liking.
And I think that's a big fault in relationships."
"My thoughts exactly," Luke
nodded in agreement. "You know, when
two people come together as a couple, they
tend to try to change one another - like
they own their mate. I think if two people really
love one another, they accept one another,
as is -"
"Because once they start changing
one another, they aren't the same person
that they fell in love with. That doesn't go to say that there won't be disagreements along the way," Kitty
finished, Luke marveling that their thoughts
traveled so closely. Kitty continued, "I
enjoy my horses and can't imagine my life
without them-"
"You ride?"
"I have a wall of trophies, I'll
have you know," she smiled. "More
showmanship than riding, though. Or should
I say 'show-womanship?"
Luke flashed a smile at her, then drawled,
"Shame that we never went on that blind
date, Kitty."
"Yes, it is," she nodded, smiling
shyly. "I suppose that it's too late
for that now."
"Guess that we'll have to make it
a bona fide date, eh?"
One week later, Luke and Kitty escaped
for a two-week honeymoon, their wedding
a private affair.
As Kitty had inferred - Luke wasn't certain that they would never
spat, because after all, they were human.
He was certain, however, that he loved Kitty
more than life itself. Love was a wonderful
thing....
