Love is Like That
Luke narrowed the dark eyes at his friend,
Kirk, wanting to knock the smirk off his
face. However, he wanted to knock the blasted
garter off his hat even more. And to make
matters worse, the one female who had caught
his attention at the wedding today was eyeing
him from afar, looking stunning in her blue-lace
outfit, a white-gloved hand pressed to her
lips as she found humor in his predicament.
Humor - always at the expense of another,
he tacked onto his whirling thoughts.
Luke shoved Kirk aside, then nodded towards
her, the garter falling off his hat and
onto the ground amid his gesture. Damn.
At least the little lady had thought
it humorous for she had turned and appeared
to be giggling.
Suddenly, Karen squealed and tossed
the over-priced wedding bouquet behind her,
Luke moving forward as the crush of frenzied
females rushing towards the bouquet all
came together around the pretty lady who
was now struggling to regain her senses
from the ground.
As he closed the distance, Karen had
practically galloped up to the lady and
as he drew near, he heard her throw out
in a rather hostile voice, "How dare
you make a scene at my wedding! I knew that
I shouldn't have invited you - and if not
for Hank, I wouldn't have."
"Karen, please. You're making a
scene, " the lady told her, choosing
to sit on the ground rather than rise and
face the dragon.
"Don't tell me what to do!"
Karen tossed out, sounding as if tears weren't
far behind.
"Karen-"
"Go to hell!"
"Open your mouth and I'll go down
a dirt road," the little lady told
her, Karen gasping and making fast tracks
from the scene.
Thankfully, the crowd of women had disbursed
to examine the wedding bouquet, or perhaps
they had sensed the moment of danger, that
being Karen's sharp tongue, Luke silently
contemplated as he neared the lady who was
still situated on the ground.
Her blue-lace dress was fanned about
her and she looked quite stunning although
her tiny hat had been knocked to one side,
revealing her dark, curly locks.
Luke was glad that she'd held her own
around the unpredictable Karen. Mark one
up for the old Hankster, he silently mocked
as he stood in front of her.
He smiled down at her as she looked up
at him, then he teased, "What
a disaster! You didn't catch the wedding
bouquet."
She giggled, then held out her hand,
Luke pulling her to her feet, her head coming
just below his shoulders. She was a shorty
- and a pretty little thing. Fragile as
a china doll.
"I see that you discarded your garter,"
she responded, her voice light and contagious.
"Not my garter," he assured.
"Let's just say that I landed myself
in a.....sticky situation."
As she laughed, he introduced himself.
"Luke Coldridge, friend to the groom."
"Kitty Nelson, sister to the groom,"
she smiled. "Good to meet you, Luke.
Hank's mentioned you quite a lot over the
years."
